Regarding Units defending against a Siege ...

I have many questions about the mechanics of a siege but most important at the moment (as I am currently under siege by my rotten brother and his despicable Vanheim minions!) is if ALL units in the Fortification contribute to the wall defense (i.e. help to keep the Defense value from dropping below 0). Is it only units set to Defend? Do Researching or Ritual-casting mages help? What about units under their control? What about units just sitting in the garrison? etc...

Thanks for any help

All units in a castle contribute to defending the castle and wall repair: Mindless units, however, are only 1/10th as effective as a normal unit. This is regardless of whether the commander of the unit in question is doing, or even whether he HAS a commander: A castle full of troops where all the commanders have been killed by seeking arrows will still repair its walls.

Do all units that are not mindless and do not have a castle defense bonus defend equally well? Do things like size, strength or moral have an effect?

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">I think that this is the case. Ability to fly may be a bonus in castle sieges, but that could just be flavor text.

Units that are besieging a castle, however, are worth varying amounts depending on size, strength, siege bonus, and ability to fly. Mindlessness is not a drawback when sieging the castle.

Re: Regarding Units defending against a Siege ...

The formula for sieging ability, which applies to both the defenders and the attackers, is:

((siegers strength)²/100)+(bonuses(1 for flying, 1 for city guards etc IIRC))

If defending, mindless units have their value divided by 10. If attacking, they have their standard value.

For non-mindless units, the difference is that some units have superior defense ability, while some have superior siege ability.

It was outlined quite some time ago in this thread.
