Re: problem beginner
1. Make sure there's at least Death-3 on your pretender if you're playing Ashen Empire; probably Death-5 for Soul Gate.
2. Select him. 3. Check the list of spells he can cast. These will include spells for summoning mages (Spectators, Dusk Elders) and priests (for Ashen Empire -- Archbishops, Bishops, Acolytes; for Soul Gate, Wraith Consuls, Shadow Tribunes etc). A Dusk Elder, for instance, is a death-3/random-1 mage. An Archbishop is an Unholy-4 priest. Both cost a lot of death gems so you won't be summoning them very quickly in the beginning. |
Re: problem beginner
Ashen empire or soul gate cannot recruit normal units from their capital. Instead, they must base their expansion on undead. You get free undead units every turn. For mages you start with some good ritual summoning spells no-one else has, try taking high death magic on your pretender and casting "dusk elder".

Re: problem beginner
thinks to taqwus, some questionmore please:
"Make sure there's at least Death-3 on your pretender if you're playing Ashen Empire; probably Death-5 for Soul Gate" where i found this ? on the pretender where i begin the game? " Check the list of spells he can cast" how? right click? i don't see any spells. i research many spells in laboratory, but i don't see any in my pretender. if you can help me, please. phil |

You give Magic levels to your pretender when you design him: click on "magic", then on the appropriate icon to increase/decrease the magic level. To see the list of rituals one of your commanders can cast, use the "cast ritual" order (in a province with a lab). To see the list of battle spells he has access to, go to the army setup screen ("t" keyboard shortcut), then click on his "select orders", and select "cast a specific spell". |

If you have trouble understanding the English in the manual, maybe you should give up on this game. It contains page upon page of item descriptions. Quote:
If you cannot take some of your troops on your commanders, there are basically two possible explanations: either the commander already has all the troops he can command, or the troops are of a type that your commander cannot command. There are 3 types of leadership: normal, magic, and undead. Most commanders have some normal leadership (scouts and spies typically don't), most mages have some magic leadership as well, and it normally takes a Death (or Blood?) mage or undead commander to have undead leadership. |
Re: problem beginner
thinks to you PhilD.i begin with ulm ans somebody wrtite to me that Ermor is a little bit easy with undead. but the magic is very important and interesting but difficult for a novice!
