Re: Utterdark and Second Sun

The spells have nothing to do with each other. Second sun increases the heat scale in all provinces in the world. Utterdark reduces income, causes unrest, causes shade attacks in enemy provinces, and makes every battle fought under the effects of the darkness spell.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Technically, yes.

But fluff-wise, it seems weird. If they for instance were to cancel the effect of each other, then that would certainly be yet another nice small detail.

I agree as well. They shouldn't DISPELL each other, but they could NEGATE the effects of each other. Nice Idea!

Re: Utterdark and Second Sun

they are not neccessarily incompatible. The main effect of second sun is extra heat according to the game, and utterdark causes darkness, but not coldness. Well both together would just make it dark and hot... extra crappy.

Re: Utterdark and Second Sun

That is how the effects stack... The descriptions of the spells would seem to incline some connection between the darkness and the sun. Mainly, something being in the way of the sun most of the time. If there are two suns, the light gets through the cover more often. It still isn't enough to give the world more light than there would normally be.

Some kind of a glasshoubd effect could do, but this is a fantasy game...

Re: Utterdark and Second Sun

If Utterdark works like a cloak to block the sun, then a second sun might just make it a hotter, dark greenhouse, satisfying Fluff the God of Things Making Sense.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Actually, a greenhouse works by letting light in, but not out. So I think the the great Fluff wont be appeased by that explanation http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

The obvious explanation is that Utterdark blocks visible light, so you can't see anything. The UV and IR radiation from the Second Sun will still get through, however, so you'll still get heat and a nasty sunburn.

Re: Utterdark and Second Sun

Ok, so maybe not a greenhouse. But visible light can be blocked while heat still comes through. Especially using Medieval physics. If second sun increases heat scale, and utterdark reduces heat scale (does it?) it might come out with an appropriate result.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Well... Actually the spectrum of light from the sun is peaked around the visible area (otherwise evolution would have had some explaining to do http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif ).

But of course, there is no reason for the world of dominions to have to be all scientific - it is fantasy after all. But still, details are nice - and having the combination of utterdark/second sun do something special would be fun I think.
