In what areas is it generally best to concentrate your research. I suppose a lot depends on the race. What helps out Pythium most in the early going and which areas are important later on?

It depends on what your aiming for, Pythium's mages can unleash a lot of power on the battlefield with evocation, but it keeps the mages from other usefull activities.
