Interesting behavior re: magic domain
 
Under 2.12, I'm playing drain 3, have found a magic 3 province, which I have painstakingly kept at neutral domain.

The interesting thing is, my smiths get +3 research in the zone (i.e. 8+xp) and my sages get +0 (i.e. 7+xp)

As I said this is true at both negative and zero domain.

This seems precisely the opposite of what I thought was the expected behavior... with smiths immune to magic scale and others not.

I wasn't sure whether one was supposed to benefit from others magic domain (I thought so, but....) tho in the case of zero domain, surely I should be able to get the +3 in normal mages?

Any thoughts?

For obvious reasons... I haven't tried positive domain, since I'm not sure I could ever get it back to +3.

Does the "not other people's domain code" only click when it's positive or neurtal having been positive?

Hard to tell what the problem is....

Smiths are not immune to magic scale: If you actually took Magic with Ulm, they'd benefit from the magic scale. However, they are not HARMED by Drain scale.

As for why the sages don't benefit, well, that's just a mystery. I do recall you weren't supposed to benefit from the magic scale of somebody else's dominion, but I'm baffled as to why the smiths get it, but the sages don't.

Mages aren't supposed to benefit from a magic scale dominion in a neutral or enemy dominion. I just ran a quick test with various mage types, and for some reason - probably an oversight in the code that makes them unaffected by drain wrt research -, Master Smiths are not subject to this rule.

i.e. if it goes neutral from positive dom for the occupier, are bonuses similarly lost?

This is hardly a game destroying edge, IMHO.

If someone is willing to go to the trouble (and believe me it is a *HUGE* pain in the butt) to
micromanage their dominion drawbacks, there should be some benefit. Particularly given that benefit will be available far less than 50% of the time, as enemy dominion creep upsets the neutrality, since one dares not overpush one's own. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif

Rabe, do share some tips on how you managed the dominion so artfully to maintain this happy state? I suspect my love of Restless Worshippers may have blinded me of some of the more subtle mechanics in the game.

Should you get bonuses from that? I would say no. Is it worth coding it to differentiate between that case and the small number of cases where the dominion is intrinsic to the province? Again, I say no.

This is pretty esoteric and not going to be used very often, I do agree. However, I like the idea of a god being subtle enough to limit dominion over here, to gain a benefit over there. The god would have to limit dominion spread to gain something, it adds a nice touch.

I have a vision of old Trotskyites at a café in Moscow, keeping the old faith alive when a new god has taken over and is letting them work free of persecution. Except the Trotskyites are wearing tall wizard hats, are researching spells and are nervously looking over their shoulders. Or perhaps they are researching sloth, that may be more appropriate. Still, the pointy beard and tall hat do go well together.
