Easiest way for Footless to Fly?
Trying to experiment a little with alternative little used Pretenders (like the ones without feet), whom I think flight (tactical and strategic) would be useful on.
Obviously, boots of flying are out; I had thought that maybe a Winged Helmet might do the trick, given that I read somewhere that it enabled flight during storms. Apparently though, it only lets units already flying to fly during storms, if what I had read is true at all. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif Hmmm - does it allow a flyer to fly strategically when the global storm spell is in effect? What about Caelum's flyers that can fly during storms? But I digress - I'm trying to figure out the easiest way to get, say, an archmage or a Wyrm or a Naga or the like to fly. With boots of flying out, am I correct in thinking that Stymphalian Wings (armor) and the flying carpet (misc) are the only ways to enable flight short of artifacts? |
Re: Easiest way for Footless to Fly?
The carpet or the wings are your only non-artifact options. Even in artifacts, I don't think you want to try using the Gift of Kurgi for flight. It feebleminds you.

Quote:
Back in Dom I a Caelum opponent of mine did cast this one for immediate 'Wrathing' purposes, and the spell ended up working against him by shutting down his strategical advantage. I haven't seen any notice of this changing in Dom II, so I would bet it still works the same way. |
Re: Easiest way for Footless to Fly?
just curious :
why has an archmage / freak lord no boots ?!? it is a human creature so he should have . i understand why a wyrm has no boots but a human archmage ?!? perhaps it is for balance to make the 55 desingpointcost human mages like frost father more attractive or is it perhaps an evil logical bug the designers overlooked ? |
Re: Easiest way for Footless to Fly?
I'm pretty sure Winged Helmet does not let you fly in a storm. Didn't work the one time I tried it, that's for sure.

Re: Easiest way for Footless to Fly?
The Winged Helmet rumor is just a particularly pernicious bit of propaganda and disinformation, and has no real basis in truth. Besides, if you tried to fly by means of something attached to your head, you would likely break your neck.

Re: Easiest way for Footless to Fly?
The newest Version of the MIQR reflects this. Apparently it did allow you to fly in storms in Dom1, but no longer allows this. However, it does provide a "Storm Bonus" AFAIK and hasn't been changed.
Edit: The newest Version of the MIQR is Version 3.0 that has been out for a few months at least. If you have a less recent Version it would be best to find the newest Version at your nearest Dominions 2 Grocer where Fresh Beef is sold. [ July 01, 2004, 17:06: Message edited by: Zen ] |
Re: Easiest way for Footless to Fly?
No moounted commanders have foot slots. The reason is propably the fact that even if the rider could fly the mount wouldn't, the same reasoning with quickness, faster movenment, trampling etc.

Re: Easiest way for Footless to Fly?
For boots to work their special powers, they need to touch the ground. Both freaklord and archmage are cavallery-type units, and those don't have a feet slot. (Presumably it's hard on your steed riding to battle with boots of the behemoth in the stirups. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif )
