OT: Graphic cards that work
My father has decided to get his computer back, and now I am getting a newer computer to replace my old 166 MHz machine. We have most things needed for a machine, keyboard, mouse, hard disks, cd and a:\ (disket?) -drives etc. Because of that, we are getting a raw machine without many extras.
In the mix we are gong to buy the suggested graphics card is Radeon 9200. I searched the forum, and found that Radeon cards do not handle OpenGL very well and that frames might be too low for the game to be playable. The problem is, I don't know enough about graphics cards to know what to choose instead. I do not play much, and most games I play work even on my older machine (!), so I don't need anything high-end. On the other hand, buying something that is outdated now seems rather pointless. In short, I need a graphics card that will run Dominions II and is not too updated to run next generation of OSs ( http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif ). I will be happy for any recommendations. Thanks for your time! Waiting for your replies. |
Re: OT: Graphic cards that work
A reasonably cheap Video Card that plays most everything is a Geforce 3. I believe it runs on even 95/98 or 2000/XP for the Windows Variety. I have no idea how it performs on a Linux or OS2 box. Though a Geforce 2 seems to run just fine. However since Johan uses a Geforce2MX that should fit the bill if all you care about is playing Dom2 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Re: OT: Graphic cards that work
Nvidia provides good, though closed, drivers for Linux. Nvidia-card are widely regarded as the only way to go in Linux for games, though ATI are catching up fast.
There are no real open alternative. Video cards are steeped in braindead patents; it'll be years and years before OS finally conquers this corner of the computer world. |
Re: OT: Graphic cards that work
Thank you! That was fast, and helpful. I ordered NVidia card, of about the same power level that Radeon would have been. The machine will come Wednesday.
Thanks for you both, again! |
