gem buff question

Where can I find the rules about how many gems I need to be carrying to cast a level greater than my ability? Sorry -- I know this is out there, but I can't seem to find it in the manual or FAQ, and not sure how to find it with the search function.

Thanks,
Merry

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">You need a single gem to raise your ability by one point. You cannot raise your actual skill by more than one point this way. You can also spend more gems to reduce fatigue. These have the effect of an effective skill increase, but will not, for example, allow an astral 4 mage to cast master enslave. The limit here is that the total spent on raising your skill and fatigue reduction must be less than or equal to your magic skill.

Re: gem buff question

Aha! So, my air 2 wizard cannot cast phantasmal army (air 4) no matter how many air gems he's toting. I had mis-remembered. I thought you could elevate your level up to double its initial amount, but it cost lots of gems. So, suppose I increase my magic ability by, say, having a fellow wizard cast Power of the Spheres. Can I then spend one more gem to pump my air 2 wizard (now air 3) up to air 4?

Thanks for your reply!
Merry

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Power of the spheres only affects the mage that cast it. This will have no affect on any of the other mages. What you want to do is cast summon storm power, which will then allow you to cast the air 4 spell.
