Wormhole defence.

Can someone explain exactly what happens if you guard your end of a wormhole. I was going by the assumption that I would have an advantage if I guarded my end of a wormhole. I believed that I would be sitting around it and get first shot. In a case I just experienced it made little difference, the enemy came through and I was sitting at the maps edge and had to move to engage not getting any specific advantage shooting first.

The ship placement routine has holes.

I believe that you have to own or have claimed the system in order to get first shot at the WP while defending it.

Secondly it might have to do with strategies, IE maximum weapons range as oposed to optimial weapons range.

Also it might be that the race attacking you is not at war with you. The fist shot should always go to the aggressor, but sometimes it does not.

Now this is just me ranting and I too would love to know the answers to this.

Were there any other empires in this sector beside yours and your enemy? This may give some unexpected starting placements of your ships.
Initial ship placement generally is a problem in SE IV and as discussed in another topic it should be improved for SE V. The random factor is just too big. However the defender should always gets the first shot if he is in weapons range (at least with the Last Version of SE IV Gold).

Well it was my home system. Q may have a point, an ally did have a single satellite there, perhaps that mucked it up.

Yes, definitely. That is the reason for it. In a game of mine I once nearly declared war on an ally who refused to withdraw his puny 2-ship-fleet from a wormhole. I knew that a large enemy force was on the other site and my only hope for survival was to hold the line at that warp point via the first shot and my ally was endangering it! He finally moved his ships just a turn ahead of the attack...

Yup,
Multiple fleets/formations will screw up the placements.
This also (sometimes, but not always) works if the attacker sends multiple fleets through at the same time http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/shock.gif

Well thats cleared that up. Obviously I will have to be even more strict about allies in my space and kindly suggest they.... not stuff up my defence plans by trying to help http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smirk.gif

Thanks for the tip re: allies at warp points. I'll be sure to avoid this in the future.

Yep, learned that the hard way in a game where Alneyan was my partner and Parabolize attacked. Parabolize started in the middle and we on opposite ends of the tactical map. Then Parabolize's fleet chose one to move against (me) and as he moved toward me, Alneyan's fleet didn't get many shots because of range. So, basically, Parabolize fought me first.

Now, especially in Anklebiters (where there are 100's of ships), I make sure my allies don't try to help me fight in the same location.
