OT: Character VS. Character

Inspired by these forums, although I havn't read much of them:
http://kier.3dfrontier.com/forums/ar...x.php/f-4.html
http://kier.3dfrontier.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=4

Basically, the idea is, match up two characters in a battle of weapons or wits and debate who wins. A superpowered character may only be matched against a non-superpowered character if the superpowered character has a weakness the non-superpowered character could reasonably exploit. So, a Batman VS. Superman matchup works for both contests, as we all know Batman always keeps at least one peice of Kryptonite around and probably has the formula and Superman could beat Batman at chess...if Batman was absorbed in a book on advanced quantum physics, scanning 8 different news channels simutaneusly and in deep contemplation of a difficult and complex crime. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif

So, first one: Han Solo(SW)(The 'shoots first' Version, not the kid-freindly 'shoots second' Version, who would Last about 5 seconds) VS. Garrak(ST:DS9)...

Hey! Unintentional Spy VS. Spy reference. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif

Re: OT: Character VS. Character

Garrak was one of Cardassia's 8 top spies, a member of Cardassia's Obsidian Order, and even reformed a guy who blew up the Romulon empires ambassador to the Federation to get them into the war against the Dominion(Framed the Dominion). Naturally, without orders.

Re: OT: Character VS. Character

I would say Han, hes more of a an action character whereas Garak is a schemer.
Spoon. Garak is a Cardassian "Tailor". That is what he used to pretend to be. Actually he used to be second in command of the Cardassian secret Police. He once talked Capt Sisko into making a fake hologram of the dominion planning to attack the Romulans. They talked a Romulan senator into coming to DS9 and showed him the fake hologram so the Romulans would declare war on the Dominion. Sisko was worried when the Senator saw it was a fake and he thought the Romulans would never help. In actuality Garak set up the whole thing simply so he could put a bomb on the Senators ship. After one dead senator the Romulans joined the war against the Dominion. There was also an episode where every 5 minutes Garak admitted the truth about himself, until 5 minutes later when you learn the real truth, and then the Real truth 5 minutes later etc.

Scene: Han Solo walks down a corridor. As he lifts his foot to take another step, an anti-personal bomb blows him to peices.

Well, it all depends on the situation:

Plot Protection revoked:
1) Do they start at opposite ends of the galaxy and suddenly discover an overwhelming and immediate need to kill each other? In that case, Garrak, hands down - he will have more time to plan out and get the various sneak attacks going, as well as do the whole hiding and tracking thing meanwhile.
2) Do they start at opposite ends of a room and suddenly discover an overwhelming and immediate need to kill each other? In that case, Hans Solo, hands down - he has a tendancy to go about armed, while Garrak has a tendancy to go around looking like a tailor (no guns). Hans would just shoot Garrak from across the room before Garrak could find a decent weapon from a stash somewhere.

Plot Protection Not Revoked:
In this case, Hans Solo is a movie character, with a mere 3 movies, while Garrak is a long-term series character. Hans is more disposeable, so Garrak wins.

ah, but we can make the assumption that 1 movie equals a year of a longterm TV series. In which case Han is only down 3:7. Also Garak wasn't a major character he only appeared occassionally when the episodes plot needed it, which until the Dominion war was only a handful of episodes a year, unlike the main characters who had to be given a part during every episode. I would say that although of a shorter duration when weighted, Hans' position as a character for whom the Plot must accomodate, instead of a extra who is there only to further the plot, makes him more important plotwise. Garak is written off.

I would say that Garrak has no visible weapons when he's working as a tailor. That is not the same thing as no weapons, and Garrak is a functional paranoid...

But could Garrak shoot as well as Han Solo? My memories of DS9 are kinda fuzzy, but I would say probably not, so Han still wins.

Also we could base it on who had more screentime http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smirk.gif I think han would win then.

Re: OT: Character VS. Character

I say hans Solo even if they start across the galaxy. Hans has more friends and alies and he shoots faster and more accuratly, (I never saw Garak shoot so I'm only speculating there).
