A free announcement provided gratis at no charge

This thread is provided for your convenience, so that you may whine for all
your lost gem income on Mose Hansen's server.

Seriously, though. The new patch has just been installed, as per Mose himself.
This means that if you have more than one clam, fever fetish, or blood stone on
the same commander, you will be getting only half of your usual income until
you spread the goodies around. So hurry up and make sure that none of your
mules is carrying two of the same item.

Hey, thanks. I had totally forgotten about that effect of the new patch.

I have some questions:

1. Is it 100% certain that Mose Hansen is now 2.14?

2. Does this change affect commanders who have two soul contracts? I hope not, as the contracts are cursed and you cannot remove them.

Y'know, given the potential impact of the patch (on fever fetish more than clams), I really don't think the patch ought to be slapped onto games without a few turns notice, to allow fetish holders to recruit more scouts or undead to hold them.

Otherwise, let's say someone has invested into 40 fever fetishes, on 20 revenants, and she only has one mage capable of casting black servant / revenant. Now she's screwed - only getting half the income from the fetishes, and not able to remedy the situation for 20 turns, summoning a new undead each turn.

Seems like something that wasn't considered a bug has been nerfed. It's not that this isn't possibly a good thing - a minor tweak in favor of those who felt that clams and fetishes were overpowered - but it's slapping a penalty on players within a currently running game, for a behavior/tactic that was officially sanctioned in the game.

Optimally, this change shouldn't have affected previously running games. (Hey, I've got two carrion woods games that weren't affected by the gem income increase for CW Pan's capital!) But at a minimum, some turns ought to take place before the change / patch is applied, imo.

Screwed... for 20 turns? 2-4 turns is a more likely figure. Revenants know how to summon too, don't they? And scouts can be recruited almost everywhere.

Hmmm, I just took my turns under 2.12...

Just a few points:
  • The server is at 2.14. The current Version is on the welcome page, and that number is taken from the ouput of "dom2 --Version", so it is always up to date.
  • Games will not automatically become 2.14 games. That will require a restart. So until the games are restarted, everything is as it always was (i.e. 2.12)
  • There is no good upgrade policy. So unless I hear about a serius regression before I install a patch, I just do it. Sorry if anybody feel that they have been adversely affected. Think of it as a really huge random, global event http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Ah. Cool - I forgot that the original executable's processes would keep running until HUPed or otherwise restarted.

Of course - this makes it difficult to know which Version a given game is running, unless you know it's been restarted. Or viewing battles with both the 2.12 and 2.14 executable, and seeing which appears more hallucinatory. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Thanks Esben!

Hmmm (brain fart)
if each game has a seperate call to dom2 then if each upgrade was done as dom2v212 and dom2v213 then the game script could call the appropriate exe for that game until told otherwise...

that might be a pain to upgrade when the players DO decide to upgrade

Re: A free announcement provided gratis at no char

Not necessarily. The web interface for each game already takes, and uses, a number of parameters that I presume are used by a shell script that calls the dom2 executable. Another flag could be added that specifies the Version, and the shell script would then call the right one.

That way, no extra work needed if an individual game upgrades - the game owner just changes the Version and restarts the game.

Of course - some extra work by Esben would be needed to implement this, and he's already done lots for the dominions community via his server and code.

Thanks again, Esben! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
