Horror Marks

Let's say you have a mage get horror marked by a spell/artifact/whatever. If that mage can cast enslave mind, can you subsequently enslave any horrors that show up to attack? If not, are there particularly good spells/bodyguards to use against attacking horrors?

On the same subject, what is the relative frequency of the different horror attacks? I'm guessing doom horrors are somewhat rare, but I'd be curious to learn what others have seen firsthand.

My only experiance is with the Forbidden Light. your chances increase a lot with this item. The lesser horror that showed up killed my Mage.

Good spells to use against a Horror are summoning spells and personal protection buffs. Anything to make it hit anything but you. It's the bodyguards that will help save a mages flaming bacon. Horrors are nigh indestructible by magic.

I never use horrormarked gear until the lategame when I can rely on the strongest bodyguards available. I usually have one of the worse horrors show up within five turns. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Magebane, which horror marks you, is also good enough to KO a horror (just like it KOs anything else; nasty in a mano-a-mano fight). http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Horrors have good MR, fly in storms, have decent HP, good prot, are ethereal, and have life-draining attacks. The toughest horrors have armor-negating attacks and an area-1 death attack, IIRC. They are lacking in elemental immunities, can't soak up vast amounts of damage (a Tartarian Titan SC might laugh at most of 'em, for instance... but then, mano-a-mano they laugh at most things), theoretically might die to Elfbane and Opposition.

If you want to see numerous Doom Horrors, try the following:

Cast a heavily-boosted global enchantment during Astral Corruption
...while standing under a Dome of Corruption
...while wielding the Forbidden Light
...while also wielding the Sceptre of Corruption
...and wearing a Robe of the Archmage (another horror mark can't hurt at this point, eh?)

I'd also have suggested the Gift of Kurgi, except it feebleminds you so you can't cast a global during AC.

In a running game of mine, I have an arch-theurg with the forbidden light,
a robe of the archmage, sitting in a lab in a magic 3 dominion. He has
been attacked maybe 15 times so far, and only one of the attacks was by
a 'standard' Horror. The rest were Minor Horrors.

Bodyguards are mostly useless. The horror will not bother with them, and
will go straight for the mage.

A better bet is ritual of returning, or whatever the spell that bring you
home if you are hurt is called. Just make sure you never leave the mage
in your capital. Not recommended for puny mages, though.

An even better bet is the battle spell that brings you home at once. The
problem with that is that while ok for a ritual caster, this script is
perfectly useless for a battle caster.

And of course, there is my way. One wish for power, an elf bane and a fire
shield, and just watch the puny arch-theurg kick the poor horrors around.

You can, but it has a MR of 20 and won't be there after the battle.
