Use of a \"dead\" system.
I'm curious what useage people find in a "dead" system. I.E one without any planets or asteroids and a dead star. I've got one as my chokepoint into my cluster so in that way it's kind of handy, but other then that I could only think of a ring/sphereworld to make use of it (which im working on since i have nothing better to do in that system). Without asteroids I can't create planets. I was able to create a star over the dead one but without planets it isn't much use. Can ANYTHING be done with these things or are they just prime Sphereworld systems?

Re: Use of a \"dead\" system.
Just tactical use. They can have warp points connected to them, and can't have system grav shields unless you do build a star and artificial world in them.

Re: Use of a \"dead\" system.
It only acts as a buffer indeed, by warning you of invading fleets (putting a spy satellite or three within the system would be a good idea; one to "engage" the fleet and get their designs, the rest to do the proper spying). Other than that, its uses are as a trap.
For example, such systems are *very* interesting if you plan to use a Star Destroyer as a "don't move any further" scheme. If they enter that empty system, their whole fleet is doomed. Likewise, you may be able to shut down the wormholes leading to this system once the enemy fleet has warped in, effectively trapping the fleet in that pointless system. Compared to a system with planets, an empty system has only one advantage in this field: you lose nothing yourself, whereas blowing up one of your inhabited systems can be painful. Nebulaes and blackholes have more direct uses though, if you can pull such strategies out (a nebulae helps to hide you, as you cannot be detected in red nebulaes, and blackholes might allow you some fun with Ionic Dispersers), but that would be another story. |

Great for friends. I use them to make friends. j/k I like to use them as neutral battle ground. and if all else fails nuke the sun that I usually create in those empty systems.

Re: Use of a \"dead\" system.
well since i'm 9/10ths of the way to a sphereworld i don't think i'll use it as a death trap...the good news is i finished my first sphereworld ever in another system that one of the AI opponents had converted from asteroids to planets (after i "relocated" him that is hehehe) THAT will be one heck of a productive system...
Also found a 1 planet 3 star system nearby which i think will be prime fodder for my first triple molly LOL...seems silly to be building these things when I already have more resource production then I can use and a maxed out fleet but it passes the time between wars. |
