Magic Duel not Magic Duelling?
 

I know there's a Ryleh player that is assassinating my guy with his Starchild.
I've sages and I scripted the astral sages to Magic Duel the enemy guy who should be an S1 mage. (since the assassins were well equipped with Bottle of Living Water and other equipment, it was fine to accept the risk of 50%).
After first success, the next time the assassin was S2 due to starshine skullcap. My Sage refused to cast Magic Duel (!!!) casting instead a Communion Slave (dunno for what master...) and died.
I know he had more chances to die than to survive, S1 against S2, in single magic duel, but he had no chances to survive against a water elemental + the assassin. It's the common bug of AI "thinking" on its own? Or it's something else?

Obligatory question: The sage did have an astral gem to cast magic duel?

The gem is only needed if one is using Magic Duel Mod.

Oh, and AI does NOT understand that it might not be the best idea to not duel with someone who has high astral magic. I found this out when my F3S2 Mystic (first I recruited in that game! woohoo! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif) magic duelled a blind, 20hp left S6 Cyclops of the enemy... and died (:() !

Are you watching the battle replay with the same Version the host is running? (Then again, some people have reported flaky replays even with the same Version.)

Yes I've the same Version of the game of the host, but it happens to me of wrong replays where I could even win and after I discover to have lost all my stuff.
