Never Healing Wound Oddness

So, in a particular battle one of my mages summoned a lesser fire elemental, which then shot off to battle the enemy. It was taking a beating but somehow managed to defeat all its attackers and rout the enemy commander. Amazed at its performance I replayed the battle and watched its stats.

It started the battle with 21, which dropped down to 7 in the heaviest part of the fighting. And here is the wierd part: At 7 hp, it gained the Battle Affliction "Never Healing Wound" and its hp went UP to 8hp.

Admittedly thats only one hp, so its unlikely to effect a battle outcome. But its terrifically odd. Has anyone else seen things like this?

Elementals are unusual in that they change size as they take damage. My guess is it is a bug related to that somehow.

I don't think it's a bug. The elementals have special sequential second shapes, achieved with the #secondshape command (i.e. when they die, they turn into monster # specified by #secondshape <nbr>). Most monsters with a secondshape also have a firstshape (e.g. the Machakan Black Sorcerer has #secondshape x and #firstshape y, where x is Hunter Spider and y is the normal Black Sorcerer)

The way these commands work is that if the first shape is killed, the monster turns to the second form, and if it survives the battle iin its second form, it reverts to the first shape again.

Elementals are different, they have sequential secondshapes (e.g. Earth Elemental starts from 492, which has #secondshape 493, which has #secondshape 494 etc) until the size one elemental has NO secondshape and will finally, permanently die.

So what really happened was that the elemental had 7 HP left, got smacked down and the next form started out with 8 HP. No bug.

Does excess damage carry over to a secondshape? I dont know the number, but for an example consider a 10hp first-shape and 5hp second-shape unit which receives a 12hp blow. Will it be 3hp or 5 hp after the blow?

No idea about that. I haven't run any tests, and there is the random effect of the dice to consider, we don't know how much they add. You could do a test by setting e.g. a fire elemental fighting some fire immune unit and see what happens. You can reference the stats for the elemental from Zen's SCQR or the Dom2_DB_Units spreadsheet available from Arryn's site. Do it a few times and see how it goes.

I think it depends on if it is a shape change, second shape or second temporary shape.

Ah, I see. I knew that elementals "got smaller" via damage, but I was unaware that it was a shape-change thing. So if this is the case, can anyone give me a pratical total of an elementals hit points?

ie Form1 == 21, form2 == 10, form3 == 5, for a total of 36hp

The question of whether or not the damage from an attack carries over is also settled. Yesterday when playing a co-op Pythium/Arco on Faerun, my friend had a Marignon army attack him and the the AI mages summoned two big fore elementals. They started out as size 6, and after one of them had gotten a few minor nicks, it got into a disagreement with a mind-enslaved Black Hunter. The BH chomped down good on the critter and cut it down to size 4 in one single blow. Apparently the damage roll was enough to completely destroy the size 5 form (17 HP) and reduce it to size 4. I'm not quite sure if it really works like that, it might have been reduced to size 5 (we didn't watch it blow by blow), but the graphic did not seem to alter at all before it suddenly shrank to almost half.

Ironhawk, the different elementals have different amounts of HP, you can calculate the totals yourself from the Dom2 Unit DB I made. You can grab that from Arryn's site.
