Map editing and victory points
I am currently editing a map for my PBEM game (Theater of War being this original map), but cannot figure out how to set victory points. It is a fairly silly question, and I cannot seem to find the answer in the mapedit file, so I seek the wisdom of the chartmakers of this forum.
Incidentally, how would you display victory points without activating a victory point win condition? The Yarnspinners game does it, but I do not know how to duplicate this effect. Or would you set the number of required VPs above the total number on the map? (I merely require the VPs to highlight some points of interest on this map, and nothing more) Thanks in advance! |
Re: Map editing and victory points
Well, the Mapmaking Oracle (that would be me...) to the rescue! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif
You can find all about special victory conditions and setting VPs on page 3 of the Mapedit PDF. End of first column and the beginning of the second. Assigning victory points is easy. <font class="small">Code:</font><hr /><pre>#victorypoints <province nbr><1-7></pre><hr /> Now, what you do is pick the special provinces you want, assign the appropriate number of VPs to each. Once you know how many VPs in total there are on the map and how they're distributed, you will know what kind of VP number will be useful a reasonable one for a VP based win. I'm not sure if you have to use this command <font class="small">Code:</font><hr /><pre>#victorycondition 1 <VPs required></pre><hr /> to enable the VP based approach, but I'm thinking that if you put it in the map file, the map will be hardcoded to ALWAYS use the VP condition. If you just assign the VPs to the appropriate provinces, you can then set the VP condition from the game settings menu when you create a new game using the map. This should answer your question, but if you have any more, feel free to fire at will. If it's not something completely insane and strange using proprietary undocumented info from IW, I should be able to help you out. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Edi |
Re: Map editing and victory points
Someone, please gather funds to buy me some eyeglasses (one will not be enough). I thought that line was about the game victory condition. Silly me. Thanks for your help!
I will clarify my second question: I do not wish to use a VP win condition. Instead, I merely intend to use VPs to indicate specific provinces; the start provinces, and the target province for example. How do you show the VPs on the map (the little crowns) without using a VP win condition? Or would requiring more than 100% of the total VPs effectively disable this win condition? |
Re: Map editing and victory points
.. you may put any icon on the map as you wish .. it's a simple .tga-file, after all. Setting VPs wouldn't do anything about how the map is displayed ..

Re: Map editing and victory points
Yes, modify the targa file to include some kind of little icon. Setting the VP requirement over what is available would also do the trick (if it's possible, that is), because the little crowns are a display effect added by the game.

Re: Map editing and victory points
To set up actual victory points would also spread dominion, and it would be kinda cool for the hill to spread extra dominion. Because the actual victory condition we are planning on using is not going to be anything built into the game mechanics, you can simply set the required VP to more than the total on the map, so that basically there will be no victory condition, but you can still have VPs on the map. I don't know a thing about mapping, but I would assume this is possible.

Re: Map editing and victory points
I completely forgot about that Dominion spread effect, which would perhaps be annoying. Something to discuss in the appropriate thread I guess.
I am very reluctant to edit the actual tga file, since it would require another download, I couldn't edit a graphic file if my life depended on it, and the map isn't mine to begin with. Thanks for your answers. |
