What do most people set their \"Max # of systems\" to?
I was always changing the settings file to max number of systems = 250,
but in the great Mephisto mod pack it is only 100. So now maybe I'm thinking of changing it to 100. Is there a reasoning behind this number? |

I find with 250 systems the game runs too long and by the time I know I'll win, there are still so many systems left, it gets a bit boring just doing cleanup.

100 systems is the standard setup for both the "normal" SE IV and the Mod pack. It depends on your taste and how long you want to play a game to set the max # of systems. I myself like to play SE IV with 250 systems, as many AI controlled races. I normally add 6 or more existing races (Narn, EA, Darlok, Sergetti etc.) and at turn one I turn over all thus created races under full AI control and play myzelf only the created new race at start up. It is normally really challenging this way, because the AI races from the Mod Pack gives you a real good fight, so it takes a lot of time to win (if at all!!) and it's not getting to bore me at all. From time to time it's nice, however, to start a game with 100 systems in stead of 250, with for the rest the settings a mentioned above. These games tend to get very interesting at ± turn 70, because we run out of free systems and to further expand we then need to fight! http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/ima...ons/icon10.gif

I've wondered why MM doesn't just add the "number of systems setting" to the configuration setup screens? It's already there in settings.txt anyway so how hard could that be? Maybe what kept them from that was that the game's SystemNames.txt file only had 100 systems in it. But now they could adopt the new one that has 400+ real star systems in it and that issue would no longer be a problem. This would be a nice little addition to the game, IMO. it maybe a program limitation, it may be limites 255 depending on the variable he used to store the value.

Can an iterrmadiate quadrent size be made? 255 is to large sometines and 100 is to small sometimes. I get tired of forgetting to switch the number in the file. Could a size between medium and large be created?

The settings.txt file in ModPack is just a default unmodified one for the 1.27 Version (with the exception of two lines at the end of the file that set maximum number of units and ships). You guys can change settings as you like (just make sure you edit the one located in SEIV\ModPack\Data folder, not the original in SEIV\Data folder). I usually play with 255-system quadrant and have no trouble with mod.
