Buy the SEIII combo set on CD rom, it comes with SE1, 2, and 3, and lots of mods and shipsets for #3.

SE#1 isn't that great, it's like hotseat multiplayer SE2 with no ship customization, and no AI to play against(IIRC)SE2>>>>>>>>&g t;SE1

If you start playing SE3, you'll never go "back" to SE I or II.

Of course, SE IV is far superior to all of them http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif With the exception of research and intellingence.

And ship repair, and combat targetting.
And those hull layers were nice.
Don't forget the right click menu http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

And the superior build queue system. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Re: Space Empires I

The local build queues were less advanced... you could only build one unit at a time.

If you mean the global ship/base queue, that's certainly different with advantages and disadvantages. It was quite easy to prioritize your project funding across your entire empire.

I remember being able to start to build a ship at a space station then able to move it to a ship yard (or the other way) with out having to start over

Good times, good times. I remeber SE3 fondly for that.

I still pull SE3 out of the dusty reaches of my hard drive to play once in a while. Still a good game! AI can give you a run for your money too.
