Retreating with sailing

Say I'm playing Vanheim and I use a sailing leader to attack a province across the sea that isn't touching one of my provinces. If I lose the battle and retreat, do all my units die? I would assume that's the case but not sure.

If you lose the battle, the army dies, as you cannot retreat across the water.
