OT - Computer Issues (aka \"blue screen of death\")

Aren't computers great? They make our lives so much simpler, don't they?

http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif

So, the newest issue is a steady stream of OE : 0028 errors. Examples:
OE : 0028 : F7EFDD29
OE : 0028 : F7D4DDB7
OE : 0028 : F7EFF029
Tried searching for clues at Microsoft.com... we all know how simple that is... nada. Most of these happen at an attemted reboot, especially when an application is performing the sequence (You must restart your computer before the blahblahblah... Do you want to restart your computer now? [Y/N])

System:
WindowsMe
2.4 Ghz Pentium4
1024MB RAM
Maxtor 60GB Harddrive

Any clues, oh my esteemed colleagues?

Turin,

Have you tried booting up in 'safe' mode? It's a long shot, but I've found that one cycle of properly booting and shutting down Windows can often fix nasty stuff.

As for the 'you must restart... blah blah' stuff... I prefer to do that myself... I think I'm more than capable to reboot a computer...

I concur. Usually such cycles of rebooting produce good results for me too. I've rebooted the f@##er 20+ times today though and been in and out of safemode at least three.

Currently reading at CNET about an Me update called Kb89something that may be doing it. I'll post back if that pans out.

Thanks Mr. Duckie

Got any of these games installed

• Microsoft Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings
• Microsoft Age of Empires II: The Conquerors Expansion
• Microsoft Age of Empires II Gold Edition
• Microsoft Baseball 2001
• Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2: WWII Pacific Theater
• Microsoft MechWarrior 4: Vengeance
• Microsoft Midtown Madness
• Microsoft Motocross Madness 2

And what chipset and video card does it have

Re: OT - Computer Issues (aka \"blue screen of deat

No. None of those. Well... MS-CFS-1, not the PacificTheater one.

Why? Think its a video card issue? I'm running a Matrox G550 Dualhead with a (can't see it thru the bluescreen) chipset.

Side note: That KB-thingy was on my computer; it's a security update for Me from January that a lot of folks are struggling with. The advice at CNET was uncheck it in Startup and run without it till Gates gets his head out of his @$$. Thought that fixed it, but installed my new Kaspersky Antivirus (highly touted, that) and got another 0028 error at manual reboot.

oop. ack.

OH. What chipset is the Motherboard? It's a SOYO with an Intel845 chipset.

OK thats good, there were some VIA/Nvidia errors with sim ID's

Well then, First I would pull some memory, about 256meg would be a good place to start. 98 Has issues with 512 or more. Then I would boot to safe mode and use MSconfig to back everything out and start adding one setting at a time until I got the error again.

If it BS's in safe mode then its hardware most likly. Try reseating the vid card and the memory and run a VOM past the power supply.

Your sig banner disturbs me T. I suppose that's the point.

I have no prob's in Safemode. (Aside from having to hot-key around cuz my USB mouse doesn't work). BTW it's not 98, it's Me. I haven't heard about problems with large RAM with it.

Are you suggesting pulling almost everything out of the Startup Programs and then reboot add one reboot add one reboot add one reboot, etc? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/Sick.gif...ugh. I guess I will if I have to.

By "run a VOM past the power supply" do you mean Volt/Ohm meter? Like insufficient voltage?

I'll reseat the Matrox and the memory.

Turin (hey man, thx for the time)

Insufficient voltage is the nice problem.
Too much voltage is the scary problem http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

I lost a lot of hardware a few years ago because of 13v instead of 12v

Your BIOS probably has some voltage and temperature readouts to look at.

That is the intent. But it does not do as much as you might first think. I tend to use it to catch comcast rolling my IP addy over.

ME does have the memory addressing issues that all 98 systems have.

Yes, I do see a lot of diagnostic reboots in your future.

And yes about the VOM. Actually a $5 volt meter would work just fine. I would be looking for a low 3.3 rail or AC leakage. But the 5 and 12+ could be at fault to.
