Switch sides
I had started a brand new game of SEIV, just to play without having notepad open and writing down what happened and random ideas. I'd played a decent(ish) number of turns when I noticed that there was only actually one AI player.
Got into a strong position where I knew I was going to win, or about the point I normally get distracted, but instead decided to swap sides with the AI and see if I could dig myself out of the hole. Quite a challenge chucking DUC III frigates at DUC V destroyers and missile cruisers, but alot more fun. So I pushed on until I recognised I was a jump and a few planets away from my old home system, then swapped back. I'm currently trying to refit the fleet to decent (in my opinion) designs, quell massed riots and balance a ruined economy... I haven't enjoyed a game of SEIV this much for a while http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif Anyone done anything similar? |
Re: Switch sides
No, but I know it would be fub. I've wanted to play something where you start as a weak little unimportant player amongst large others often. Heck, my last few games of Europa Universalis II were as Bavaria, enjoyed that very much.

Re: Switch sides
Bizarre- not often I get to link to the malfadorica twice in a day. Hit refresh if it doens't come up first time, and then consider the third bullet point.

IIRC, it is an SE4 Classic game. If you just have gold then never mind. |

To jog a few memories the idea, as I remember was: You start with an Tausennigan Thunderhead superfortress, No coloniser tech, small caputure capable ship and a load of ground troops. Every planet/tech has to be captured, but the Thunderhead has a fabber for limited construction and huge repair ability. That would definetly make you the little guy, especially if homeworlds (only) had uber shipyards/facilities to stop you stomping them in the early turns. Or a multi-planet start for the other players of course. |
Re: Switch sides
You know what would be a fun scenario? Something like ST:Enterprise, where you start as a low-tech race with a single homeworld amongst various large higher-tech races, wiht several wars likely to erupt. Also, if you get involved in a war (or if you start one), you will need to have at least one ally to watch over you to avoid your destruction. This would mean that diplomacy would play an important role in the game, and moreover some of the best chances of your victory would be by acquiring various techs from all sorts of races and using that to your advantage. For example, one race might posess high Troop technology, while another is proficient in the use of Fighters and another makes extensive use of Missile Weapons, but all three have little expertise in any tech area that another race has specialized themselves in. You (as being the small lowtech race) could be able to trade with all three, and thus acquire Troops, Fighters AND Missile Weapons, and thereby achieve technical superiority.

Re: Switch sides
Wouldn't really work with the AI and diplomacy of SEIV, but heres hoping for SEV!

But I did make a Schlock Mercenary shipset: http://imagemodserver.mine.nu/other/MM/SE4/Races/ |
Re: Switch sides
It was only mentioned as a proposal, not as an actual mod in development.
And yes, Strategia is an Imperial Ego. So what? He means, he's still just a normal guy! |
Re: Switch sides
Exactly and it was that shipset which inspired froth about making the mod, many threats, promises and good intentions. Which it seems didn't result in any action.
