CSM Troubles
I was just playing a game with/against the AI (I controlled only a single fleet, the ministers controlled the rest of my empire) when strange things began to happen with the CSMs which the AI apparently appointed as being the weapon of choice for my empire.
First, I played a combat replay of an enemy attack (1 ship) on one of my planets. The WP present on the planet only fired one volley of CSMs despite being intact and in range of the enemy ship for like 20 turns. Then, an enemy fleet of 7 ships attacked a planet cluster (1 planet, 2 moons, all colonized) and I decided in favor of Tactical in light of the event described above. The planet was pretty full of WPs with CSMs. I fired several volleys at the enemy - however, several volleys did no damage at all for some reason. WTF? CSMs which refuse to fire? Phantom CSMs? What is this? (Please Note I'm using 1.61 Gold, no mods) |

*turns monitor upside down*
Ah. 1.91 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif I'm sure that was a typo. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif |
Re: CSM Troubles
Nope, I installed it from the Gold CD directly. I don't have Internet on the computer where I've installed SEIV, and this computer where I am now is technically not mine and I could get into trouble if I installed it here, and btw other people use it so I can't spend all day modding http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif I also can't burn the upgrade on a CD, and it won't fit on a disk http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif
And if you turn the monitor upside down it'd display 19.1, and I don't think SEIV has had a nineteenth version yet. I just wanted to know if this was an existing bug or that it's simply my computer f*cking me again? |
Re: CSM Troubles
Most of the compression programs like WinZip will do "disk spanning" to let you use multiple floppies to hold one big file.
For WinZip 8.0: "WinZip® makes it easy to create Zip files that “span” multiple disks. This is useful if the files you are working with will not fit on one disk. To make a Zip file that spans multiple disks, simply create a Zip file on a removable disk, then add files to the Zip as you normally would. If the disk fills during Add operation, you will be prompted for another disk. Simply insert the next disk and click the OK button." I don't have a floppy on this sys so I haven't done it in a while, but it has worked fine in the past. Good old Windows backup/restore is good too, but I dunno if it comes on the newest versions. |
Re: CSM Troubles
To answer your bug question: I don't know about this bug. Might be a glitch in this particular game of yours or might already be solved by an update. 1.61 is a version from the long gone past that I don't remember bugs from these time anymore http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: CSM Troubles
I think it's probably my computer f*cking with me again. I have a love-hate relationship with the thing. If I had a shotgun it'd be dead over three hundred times now http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif
Anyway, just installed SEIV on this PC and updated it. That solves the disk problems. Now, all that remains is to transfer the remaining Work In Progress mods here http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif Fortunately there's not that many of them. |
Re: CSM Troubles
Firing on a planet, eh?
The likely cause is those missiles being fired when the ship is <max-range> squares away from the nearest corner, instead of the mid-top-left square of the planet (IIRC) which is where the missiles hit. Basically, they fizzled out before they reached the surface. If you add a 21st damage at range value, then your missiles will fly SE3 style and never fizzle. Once they pass 20 squares of travel, they will do the 21st amount out to infinity. |
Re: CSM Troubles
No, the ships were the AIs, I controlled the planetary weapon platforms. The ship remained in range. It was a stock game, AI-PBC-style. I mainly controlled one fleet, but took on planetary defense duty then because the replay showed the other planet's CSMs only fired once.

Re: CSM Troubles
Missile hits on the planet go to the top left, even though the range may be calculated from the nearest corner of the planet.
Thusly, the ship may in range, but the missile has to travel too far, and fizzles. When a planet fires missiles at a ship, the missiles appear randomly in the middle four squares of the planet. Some of the missiles have further to travel than the others, and could potentially fizzle. |
