I feel your pain. In my second game, I started in a system with two warp points. On turn 8, my home planet was blockaded. I managed to destroy the ship and made a trade alliance with the attacker. On turn 18 the Sergetti showed up through the other warp point. I have four planets doing nothing but military research and military production. The Sergetti just brought in ships with shields so my days are numbered.

When you colonize that new planet try building weapon platforms or satellites first before anything else. If the AI doesn't have point defence weapons yet put missles on them and see if that helps your new colony survive.

In very begining research mines, build and deploy mines over your planets, small at start then maybe a few med with decent warheads. This should keep them from turning your planets into parking lots at least until you build some WP's or small battlestations. this will only work until the AI obtains mine sweeping, so don;t count on it forever. Also you might want to mine your warp points to keep them out... just some ideas. mac

Well, this is a switch! People used to moan about the AI not being aggressive! http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif A good thing to do once you've made contact with some race is to build WPs on your home planet (or a staging planet) before you even send the colonizer. Then send a small fleet to colonize the new planet. 1 colonizer, 1 transport with WPs and extra population filling any remaining cargo space, and at least 1 armed escort (role, not class http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif ) to protect them. After colonization, drop the WPs and extra population. Send the transport home. Optionally, let the ship(s) which escorted the colonizing fleet remain with the colony for a while, depending on how badly you need it/them and depending on how dangerous the trip home is for the transport.
