Any One Still Stay Up All Night Playing?

I was sitting here, at my computer, bored to tears, blanking looking at my monitor, and asking myself; "what do I have to do?" When it occurred to me that I am without a doubt one of the most pathetic people living today. Here I am, a guy with nothing but time on his hands, some money in the bank, and aside from some more than minor health issues, able to do pretty much anything I want, with some limits. I am living everyone's dream to get paid to stay home, not as glamorous as it could be and it does have its draw backs, and I am bored. Sure I am free to do as I please, but I have discovered that freedom is equally proportionate to the size of your pocket book, and mine is rather small indeed. Couple my weak economic situation with my health concerns and well you end up right where I am right now, sitting in front of my computer, an aging POS full of great games that I no longer have any interest in playing, say for one. The one that has kept me going night after night after night for nearly five years now. Oh yes, you know the game that I am talking about, no its not Dominions II, albeit a fine game in its own right, I am talking about the Space Empire Iv, the game that was formerly sold by Shrapnel, the same company that has been kind enough to keep these forums here for us to use despite no longer having any affiliation with Malfadors title. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Any ways, as I sit here typing my tangent, I can't help but wonder if any one still stays up all night playing SEIV? When was the last time you stayed up until the light was shining through the window playing this highly addictive turn based 4x space strategy game?

For me it wasn't all that long ago. Sure I am a beta tester for SE V, and have spent many of hours play testing in the beta, but never all night sessions like I have with SEIV.

My last all-nighter was about a week ago as I tested the latest version of the STM. "STM?" you ask. The Star Trek Mod. It is a mod based on star trek created for the enjoyment of all SEIV / Star Trek fans.

I played a game of stock recently, as the Phong, and kicked EEE *** all over the map. That game lasted until about 4 am when I decided that sleep was more important than crushing my last enemy and his little empire.

Right now I am considering setting up another STM game, using new empire settings for the Borg/Ferengi/Cardassians/and Klingons. But the room is hot and I am sore from having done nothing all day long. The heat, I do despise the heat horribly. I should get up and get a fan but that would require me to move and well, once I sit my fat *** down I seldom like to move unless there is food or sex involved. (Food being the better part of the two evils, as sex requires some work. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif) Who am I kidding, my ex-girl friend dumped my sorry *** the moment I played my first all night session of SEIV - Standard way back in 2001. Not that I was sad to see the door hit her in the *** on the way out, I wasn't, but the lack of constant yelling, screaming, and onslaught of negativity I do miss.

Of course I am being facetious and that is wrong of me, or is it? Any ways I am about typed out, feeling the need to get that fan that the heater just kicked on and the room temp just shot past 80 degrees. (Damned if you do, damned if you don't.)

Any ways let me know if any of you still play all night.

Not ALL night, but definately into the small hours.

And often. She hates it; thinks I'm up all night porn-surfing. You shoulda seen the ballistics when I took about 5 nights in a row building the silly flash-site in my sig. (Aa' Turam)

@TT: Tell her if she's convinced of that, she should stay up all night watching you.

@AT: Try swimming. I recently took it up and (With a discount for being crazy) it's cheap, fun and doesn't feel like work - Not when there's a hot water pool. Aaaahhhhhhhhhhhh.....

Last time i played all night.... SEIV 3 or 4 years ago. Other than pbw games i do not play SEIV. Would have done so beta testing SEV probably but as a sub in tourney i was ineligible to win.

Hi Atrocities,

Your Star Trek mod had me pulling all-nighters a few weeks ago. It's a terrific mod and I tip my cap to you. Thanks!

Lately, however, all I've been doing is working on a new map while waiting for your next update.

Again, thanks. Your mod and my map-editing are among the few things helping me to survive my work situation http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/mad.gif -- well, not the work itself but my co-workers. (I dream of finding a job where my colleagues are A. professional, B. dedicated and C. supportive. Oh, well.)

I don't do all-nighters because of work, but I have been known to play "just one more turn" past 11 pm. I probably would not play all night even if I could, because I just don't have that kind of energy any more.

But I probably play SE4 more than any other game.

The wife doesn't give me any problems, knowing that I work hard and also do a lot of things around the house. Playing SE4 is more fun and a lot cheaper than hanging around at a bar.

As you know, Atrocities, I recently entered the wonderful world of your Star Trek Mod. Over the last few weeks I read several Trek novels, and really wanted to try the mod out. Saturday I had a few hours where I had to be away from home, so I started the DL and it was done by the time I returned.

So now I have one STM game going (Klingons), plus 2 DevNull ones going (Klingons and Ferengi) and one stock game going (Crugarians).

BTW, last week it was terribly hot where I live, but now it's cooled off considerably and I have come down with a cold. It figures: first day of summer and I have a cold. If it's worse tomorrow I will call off, take the wife to her job, come home and then play SE4 for much of the day.

First off, AT, if you're looking for something to do, take a trip up North, to Canada. Come for a visit!

Second, yep I still stay up playing SEIV. Actually, most recently I stayed up playing SEIII...don't know, I still get the urge to play after all these years. SEIV...well I'd play it all night, and do sometimes, except I love huge, 255 system galaxies, and with my computer after about 100 turns, the turn processing takes forever. So I kinda lose interest after the turns take 5 or more minutes to process. Not to mention the fact that within those 5 minutes I usually fall asleep! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif

No, I regret every time I played all night & looked like a C.H.U.D. the next morning. It takes days to recover from one of those sessions, too. So I am determined not to do that anymore. Not even with SE V. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif Come to think of it, I've still got to get my suggestion in to include some sort of alarm in SE V that warns you how late it is. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
