Unarmed ships can\'t ram?

I started a simultaneous game against the AI just now. An enemy warship was headed for my homeworld, and all I had there were 3 unarmed scouts. I put them all in a fleet and gave the fleet "kamikaze" strategy. When the battle happened, all my ships ran away to the corner and the enemy ship fired on my defenseless planet. Do ships need to have a weapon of some sort in order for the kamikaze strategy to work?

I don't think so. I just ran a test and my unarmed scout headed straight for the victim. however there are a few things to consider.

1. You said you gave a fleet the orders. Well within the strategies, even ram, transports and other sorts of ship are by default set to break formation. So they may forget about fleet orders and revert to the ships default.

2. The shiptype must be set to ram. I tried fleet orders of ram while the ship default was optimal and it wasn't interested in ramming.

I make use, in some games, of a ship strategy to ram when it's lost its weapons and it works.

You have to set the strategy for the ship design to kamikaze in the ship design screen. Unarmed ships completely ignore the fleet strategy, and always follow don't get hurt unless their design is set to something else that doesn't require a weapon to carry out.

You can change that in the Strategies window, you know.
