...or did they add some new units to some themes in patches? I don't remember BoH having those axemen or Sanguine mages.

Not that it is awfully relevant but I'm wondering since there was essentially a two year pause for me.

Yep.

New Era and Carrion Woods were improved in 2.11 and 2.12. Desert Tombs was also rebalanced in 2.12.
