OT: James Doohan

Doohan Obit

Terribly surprised no one has posted on this yet. Scotty was one of my favorite characters.

He was a great man and will be sorely missed. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif Thank you for posting about this. It is very very sad.

Frankly I am in a quandry about this. Was he actually a great man?

I was all setup for something along the line of 'He's no Pope.' when it occured to me that he'd probably made more people laugh, cry, smile and enjoy themselves than any Pope.

Thus, logically, an actor most famous for being on the recieving end of a line that was never spoken ('Beam me up Scotty') was a better man than any Pope. At least by my book.

That last statement should be wrong, but I don't think it is. I am confused.

Regardless of my confusion and/or borderline schizophrenia he did seem a genuinely nice man and its always a shame when one of those shuffles of this mortal coil. Sad news.

Seems to me he lived a long, happy, and fulfilling life. Not sad at all.

Depends upon how you view things. To each is own. I meet him and have my own unique opinion for which I based my comments.

What is poignant for me is how little I knew about him.
I found out a lot yesterday -- like the fact he served in the Canadian army at Normandy & was severely wounded there (took 6 machine gun bullets, including one to the chest!). I also didn't know he suffered from Alzheimer's. I did know he started in radio as a voice man, doing different accents, although I have to admit I found it strange to hear him speak in roles other than Scotty. I understand SpikeTV will be playing a couple of ST episodes featuring Scotty today if I'm not mistaken.

Only those who have met him know that he is also missing a finger. You would not know it to watch Star Trek, but he was indeed missing part of one of his fingers.

He was not suffering from full blown Alzheimer's as some would have us believe.

I can tell you that he did not like being asked stupid questions at conventions and such. By stupid I mean stupid questions such as: "How do you feel, being scottish and all, about O'Brian, an Irishman, running the transporter on the new Enterprise D?"

"I don't have an opinion, I am not scottish, I am Canadian!" LOL. That was a classic.

He was not a great actor, but he was a beloved one.
