Why Star Trek??

Ok, first off let me say that I do enjoy Star Trek. DS9 was my favorite, Voyager is good and I am eagerly awaiting both the new movie and the new show. Now here is my problem. IT IS BEING DONE TO DEATH!! I won't go on about how the shows cannabalize earlier shows as this is a SE4 post. This is about the wealth of shipsets that are either already out there or could be created. Star Trek is good but it is not the 'end all' of all science fiction (that and enough of the Janeway slamming, she's not that bad. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif. ). I love the trek shipsets but there are so many other sources that could be used for ideas (besides your own imagination.) We already have StarWars (very few though, with some annoying line problems on the mini's) and Starblazers (YES), and now someone has resurrected Space1999 (very well done I might add). But think of the possiblities (and the fun) of the more obscure. Here is my list of what I would love to see (yes my skills at moray, pov-ray currently suck, later I will hopefully release my own shipsets.) : Robotech, Battletech, L.E.G.I.O.N (dc comics), Moo1 & 2 (come on, where are those annoying Psilons?? http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif ), Warhammer (saw a partial shipset but when finished?), Wing Commander, Space Above and Beyond, Marvel Comics (Skrull, Sh'air, Kree, Starjammers {Pirates!!}). AD&D (Spelljammer anyone?), the Preditors(sp?) and of course SpaceBalls (would love to see them. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif ) There are tonnes more.(H.G. Wells anyone?)
I am not really dissing Trek, it is the archetype of most science fiction today and will be for a long time but there is just more out there.
Hopefully I didn't offend too many people, just wanted to let those with the art/ai skills know that some of us love the obscure as well as the established.
PS: EAGERLY awaiting the BSG shipset!

Spaceballs.. now that would be cool! imagine a giant planet destroying mega-maid entering orbit of your homeworld. ( oh no!! it's mega maid, she's gone from suck to blow!!)

also some starcontrol2 shipsets could be fun, especially the speech files, I really liked the spathi and mycon for example.

I think people enjoy the Star Trek mods because they can relate to them better than most other sci-fi based sets. Star Trek has been around for years and many people are quite familiar with it - so it makes a good start to role playing because you have an idea of how to behave as Klingons or Romulans, etc. Also, a lot of the gamers are under 20, so they won't really remember Battlestar on tv or Star Control from the early 90's.

For me, I haven't used any of the Star Trek mods, but even my own Spoogy Universe adjustments are very similiar - phasers, disruptors - they just seem more "realistic" than meson bLasters - what are mesons anyway?

I have been working on ships for BFG using POV-ray, nearly done with the ships for chaos but still need some work with keeping details for the mini pictures, and have started working on the Imperial ships but not very far on those. Havn't started on a Chaos AI yet since I'm using the ships for my own race because I really like the look of them

When I finally finish the Imperials, Chaos, Eldar, and Orks; I'm planning on trying to make ship sets up for TOG and Renegade Legions, although I would like to see the Kzinti from Star Fleet Battles and may get sidetracked. Only have so much time to work on them on breaks at work, or I end up not being able to spend time playing the game at home.

Actually, you should check out the howe old are you post. You will find most of the modders are at an age that can remember BSG, Starblazers, 1999, and meny other shows.

I would love to see a set on Space Above and Beyond, two problems prevent me from making one
A) I don't think they showed enough ships to make a proper set, I'll have to check though, since I ended up missing half the episodes.
B) I'm a horrible artist <G>

I don't mod yet, but I would give it a shot (At least a pic shipset) if I could find enough ship pic's to do a Space 1999 mod. That was always my fav show when growing up...

There is another post were someone has done a shipset for 1999, they still need and AI. You should contact them and see if they need help.

(Gamer_tampa and I are doing the BSG sets and AI.)

Half the particles in the universe are mesons (quark +anti-quark) http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif
So a meson bLaster is just a subatomic particle cannon.

Pick a decent meson to use, and shoot them at the enemy. It's so general a term that it can't help but work.
