Setting ships in formations

Is there a way to tell where my ships will be positioned in a formation before I go into combat? Are positions 2 & 3 the ships above and below the lead ship?
I've searched the Boards for my answer but can't find it.

yeah, in the formations text the number of the ships in the formation corresponds to their order in the fleet. i THINK that their order in the fleet corresponds to the order they were built in, I used to think otherwise, but now i think its just screwy.
