OT: Great Music
It's been a while, so lets have another thread on music! Here's a few of my favorite bands:
- Our Lady Peace (awesome!) - Slipknot (good if you like heavy metal type music) - Disturbed (again good if you like heavy metal) - Collective Soul (great lightish rock band) - Elvis Presley (a classic) - Foo Fighters (good band) - Matchbox 20 (I'm running out of things to write about the bands) - Metallica (Their older stuff was good) - Mudvayne (Up and coming hard rock band) - Offspring (The second time I ran out of things to say) - Papa Roach (So I'll just list them now) - Finger Eleven (If that's ok with you) - System of a Down (And even if it isn't) What are some of your favorite bands? |
Re: OT: Great Music
System of a Down really gets on my nerves when I listen to them. Don't know why.
I definitely agree that Metallica's older stuff was good. The newer stuff... meh. I've been going on an old rock binge lately: Zeppelin, Clapton, Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Credence Clearwater Revival, Iron Maiden (not really rock), to name a few. Modern music tends to be so... corporate and soul-less. It's pretty funny: my father will mention a band he liked as a kid, I will check it out, and there is a good chance I will like it too. Too bad he is starting to get into Country music these days... blech. |
Re: OT: Great Music
Corporate and soulless? Uh oh...Fyron's been bitten by the "Hate society, gov't, capitalism; anarchy rules!" bug http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif Just kidding, of course.
I would agree that Metallica's new stuff sucks badly. And so does country *shudder* |
Re: OT: Great Music
Country Music eh? Trully a sign of Apocalypse http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
My personal favourites are Paradise Lost, Muse, Garbage, The Smiths, Apocalyptica, Seigmen, Beborn Beton and The Crüxshadows. Although to be honest at the moment I've been listening to a lot more film soundtracks. Sean Callery's soundtrack to the tv show "24", Graeme Revell and Hans Zimmer are rarely off my playlist. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif |

Re: OT: Great Music
Yeah, the 'classic' rock of the 1960s and 1970s is still good. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Who are the triad tied for 'greatest rock band of all time' and then you've got other interesting but slightly less famous/influential bands like Jefferson Airplane/Starship, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & (sometimess) Young, or the Moody Blues. I think some of Zeppelin is good but they're not this 'fantastic' band that so many people seem to think they are. Some of the bands from the 1980s are pretty good but most of them turn out to have gotten started in the 1970s -- Genesis, The Talking Heads, Super Tramp, etc. (Hmm I guess Super Tramp was already famous inthe 1970s... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif ) U2 was around in the early 1980s, and I think their first few albums are actually their best. The 1990s and later are not looking so good. I wonder if the stuff being crapped out now will be considered 'good' in 30 or 40 years.
Besides the 'classic rock' field, though, I've become interested in various 'alternative' genres. But today the genres are so narrow that you'll usually only find a few bands that you like in any one category. Some of the so-called 'techno' bands are quite good. Delerium, for example. But lots of it is just boring noise. Same for 'New Age' music. Some of these artists are good, some of them are just useless and smarmy at the same time. Yes was much better 'New Age' music in its time. Too bad they've corroded so badly over the years. Can't stand any of their new stuff. (King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Yes, Alan Parsons Project and such stuff used to be called 'Art Rock' before all the sub-genres appeared.) |
