OT: Massive computer woes

Alright, so my new computer is [censored]. I hauled it home today, since I was coming home for thanksgiving. I set up my computer, start it up, and it did it's usual (one of the fans makes a loud screeching noice). So I did my usual, I opened the case and gave it a tap. That fixed the noise, as it usually does. However, now the monitor is frozen. Alright no problem, restart the computer. Not alright. The monitor now displays absolutely nothing. Switch to another monitor. Nothing. Switch video cards, still nothing with either monitor. Computer will still turn on, turn off, but of course that's all I know, since I can't see a damn thing without the monitor! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/evil.gif

Any suggestions as to what the problem could be, or what I can do about it? If need be I can take it to where I purchased it, and hopefully the warranty will cover it, but the place I purchased it from is an hour and a half away, and I NEED the computer for university by Tuesday. I'm hoping someone will be able to help me here.

Unfortunately, I have a bad feeling about what the problem is. I hope it's not, but there could have been a static discharge when I tapped the fan (which, by the way, sits on the motherboard) which fried a portion of the motherboard. I hope that's not the case, but it might be...

your computer isn't very old. Should still be covered under warranty. Just don't say anything about tapping the fan.

...or upgrading the video card. I'm saying nothing at all about messing around with anything, and replacing the original video card. No need to give them any suspicions. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Called the retailer, bringing the computer in tomorrow at 9...unless of course someone has any ideas??? They said it's most likely a hardware problem (which I already knew), and that hardware problems would be covered under the warranty. So yippee, I get a 3 hour round trip drive tomorrow, plus however long I have to wait around...:(

Be sure to write down the exact stats you have. And make sure you get at least that much back.

Did you get any beeps out of the internal speakers as it was starting up? Usually the monitor blacks out when there is some sort of hardware problem, and the beeps are supposed to let you know what it is that is fishy. It could just be something not plugged in all the way.

I got the beeps at first, then after a few starts/restars, they quit. I think it was just one beep, medium length.

Check your motherboard manual for the meaning of the tones.

I think its your MB Ren... sometime we have a static charge that when our finger comes close to the MB it jumps from us to the board thus frying it. This is why you need to ground yourself before touching anything inside of your case.

I thought I was grounded when I was inside, but obviously wasn't. Can't get a replacement motherboard ordered until Tuesday, won't arrive till probably Friday. I'm out a computer for about a week then.

Anyone in PBW games with me, after this long weekend I will not be making any turns whatsoever until Saturday next week or so. Sorry for any inconvenience. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif
