Gunship questions.
Recently I've been playing some games in Nam, in 1965.
Some things have occured to me. Unit 117 UH-1B Gunship, has 2 M60's, and two 2.75" FFAR's, with ammo 9HE. Now I may be wrong, but shouldn't it have 2 lots of 2xM60? Each side had a pair of M60's linked. Also it only seems to have 7 Rockets on each side, not 9. And wasn't there a Version with a pair of mini-guns, replaceing the M60's, as well? Here's just one page of the many thousands that can be found confirming the above: http://incolor.inetnebr.com/iceman/ |
Re: Gunship questions.
David,
As you already know (from the project), in the Vietnam war there were many configurations for the attack Helicopters. Before each mission, the Bn Commander decided what was the best configuration for that mission. According to the material availability they could adapt in the UH-1B/C the following Armament Subsystem: M3 armt subsystem M5 armt subsystem M6 armt subsystem XM11 missile launcher XM14 gun pod XM15 dispenser M16 armt subsystem XM18 dispenser XM19 dispenser M21 armt subsystem M22 missile launcher M23 armt subsystem XM26 missile launcher XM29 armt subsystem XM30 armt subsystem XM31 armt subsystem XM47 mine dispenser XM50 armt subsystem XM52 smoke generator M59 armt subsystem XM93 armt subsystem XM94 armt subsystem M156 armt subsystem XM165 grenade dispenser MINI-TAT turret Sagami mount and these subsystems included the following weapons: 24-tube rocket launchers SS-11B anti-tank missiles M3 .50 cal. machine gun XM170 flares quad M60C 7.62mm machine guns flares or munitions MK45 flares 7-tube XM157 or M158 launchers AGM-22B anti-tank missiles M60D 7.62mm machine guns TOW anti-tank missiles XM140 30mm gun M24A1 20mm cannon XM2 anti-personnel mines M5 40mm grenade launcher atomized fog M60D 7.62mm machine gun or M213 .50 Cal. machine gun or XM175 40mm grenade launcher M134 7.62mm "minigun" M129 40mm grenade launcher 7-tube M158/M158A1 or 19-tube XM159/ M200 launchers CS smoke grenades in XM15 cluster Now... I am positive that you could find several units of UH-1B/C in the stock OoB with different configurations, but as you understand this would create an endless list of units with almost similar characteristics. Instead, what you find is a generic unit that combines most of the above with a well balanced configuration for a gunship. IMO, the current configuration for the UH-1B gunship is very good. Also the next gunship (1967-1972) AH-1G Cobra has also a very good configuration. The only thing that was missing was the Aerial Rocket Artillery helicopters, and as you already know they will be included in the next patch. Also if you wish to have an attack helicopter with Miniguns you may change/modify the current weapons since the ammo data fits both the Miniguns and the M60s! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif cheers, Pyros |
Re: Gunship questions.
David,
One basic Armament Subsystem was the M21 Armament Subsystem (1964-1975). M21 Armament Subsystem (1964-1975). The UH-1B/UH-1C/UH-1M "Huey" could be armed with twin side mounting 7.62mm "miniguns" and two XM157 or two M158/M158A1 seven-tube 2.75 inch rocket launchers on the Emerson M21 armament subsystem. The M21 was an up-gunned M16 which used M134 "miniguns" in place of quad M60C machine guns. The M134 used a MAU-56/A delinking feeder. The pilot used a XM60 reflex-type sight for both guns and rockets. The copilot used a flexible reflex sight which depressed or flexed the "miniguns" only. The M21 was type classified Standard A (over 406 units were built). XM21 armament subsystem with XM157 launcher (with M6 quad M60C machine gun mount) http://tri.army.mil/LC/CS/csa/m6m21.jpg In the game, you find that the UH-1B gunship has 2x M60s and 2x 19pods FFARs (9 ammo x 2 FFARs), instead of 4x M60s and 2 x 7pods FFARs. On a closer look you will understand that the equilibrium is the same, one rocket pod in the place of 1 M60 gun. cheers, Pyros |
Re: Gunship questions.
I've actually added in a number of different gunship configurations for both the US Army and the USMC, addressing this issue. I've added in the most common configurations, as well as, some odd-ball ones including the UH-1M INFANT and a UH-1B with the Maxwell System.
If you want my Vietnam specific Obats I'd be more than willing to send them to you. Edit- Here is a list of new gunships I created for the Vietnam timeline US Army: AH-1G Cobra w/ XM35/M35 armament subsystem (created the XM195 gun for this job, armament is Minigun, M75 GL, XM195 cannon, 2x2.75" rockets) UH-1B Maxwell (Maxwell System), 2x2.75" rockets x 2 (with 6 ammo) and 2 SS.11 ATGMs Two UH-1Ds w/ spotlight equipment (vision 17), one with an M2HB, one with a minigun UH-1C/M XM21/M21 with dual miniguns and rockets (similar in form to the UH-1 Bushmaster in the Australian OOB) UH-1C/M Hvy Hog (Heavy Hog) w/ M75 GL and 2x2.75" rockets x 2 (with 12 ammo) UH-1C Frog, as with the heavy hog, but with ammo 3 for the rockets UH-1M INFANT, same as UH-1M XM21, but with vision 30 And a redone ACH-47A to be more accurate, now with 2x Hispano M3, 4x2.75" rockets (with ammo 9), and M75 GL USMC: UH-1E TK-2, with new weapon 7.62mm M60 (2) instead of single M60s Two UH-1B Gunships w/ M2HB and Miniguns (as door weapons) along with standard rocket loads, along with new formations as "COIN Armed Helicopters" for the Seawolves of the MRF. Also, a UH-1C XM21 carried over for this purpose. Another UH-1E TK-2, but also with the TAT nose turret, so there's a total of 6 M60s, plus 4x2.75" rockets with ammo 3 |
