AA bug or help needed?

Hello there,

I have huge problems with enemy AA-guns when playing Balkan wars 2008 scenario 3. AA guns can see and fire my Helos (even landed ones!) behind trees and all the smoke in the world.

I'm playing WINSPMTB 2.5

Any advice or is this "just" a bug?

Balkan Wars 2008? Sounds like they all probably have vision 40 or maybe even above, which basically allows them to do this. The capabilities of thermal imaging on the battlefield cannot be stressed enough in terms of the edge it gives a person.

I'm having a similar issue playing a random campaign in 1993, and dealing with Danish TOW-2 teams with vision 40 putting holes in tanks behind smoke and from behind primary tree cover.

1) if the AAA has thermal sights, it can see through smoke to the limit of its visibility.

2) if the AAA is radar aimed, then it sees flying (not landed) air targets through smoke or darkness to the limit of LOS on the map.

3) When visibility is very high, you can see into trees a few extra hexes with all vision, and a hex or 2 more if the trees are merely orchards. When visibility is lower, trees block LOS more. Thermal sights can see things a hex or so more into trees than unaided vision. So in high visibility, or against thermal or radar sights, a single row of trees may not block LOS. In that case you will need a few hexes (2 or 3) of trees. Was this scenario high visibility (say 80 or so?).

Cheers
Andy

Here is some extra information.
Turks have 35mm (2)AAA
Gun has vision 0, but i think the gun is radar controlled due its high cost (fire control 105). Vision in scenario is 15.

AA fire is coming from 3100 meters trough multiple lines of trees. If if i land fire just keeps on coming.

I try to send my save file here if you want to check it out.
There is helicopter b3 in hex 9,64 try to take it to hex 7,63 and land there...

Is the gun emplacement elevated? If it is higher up, it may be seeing over the trees. Had this happen a few times in my Vietnam campaign, landed the slicks in what I thought was a safe LZ, 2 S-60s on a hill told me otherwise. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

That's it, Fire Control above 99 is AA radar, so according to what Andy just said it will be able to see through smoke and some amount of trees at a distance.
And indeed your AA gun mut be on a hilltop somewhere if it is able to catch you landed.
I hope you invested in some SEAD planes!
Else, if that guns has been shelling you for some time already, you should be able to see at least the gun itself or a cloud of smoke where it is firing from. Then just beat it senselessly with all the arty you have (I hope you have at least some) and try to move your helicopters away while the gun is retreating.

If you have neither SEAD aircrafts nor artillery, well... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
