Interesting web finds

Recently finding something interesting, and thinking that we could use a place for posting interesting things on the web, I made this thread.

http://www.livejournal.com/community/crossing_lostrp/

It's a Lost (tv show; only seen a little) crossover/multiple author story. See, each author contributes up to three characters from other fictional universes...Completly serious, not a spoof. Shaping up very well, with good writting all around.

OK that virus thingy is adictive. I made it to level 8 and then there were just too many of those white cloud thingies.

The virus game is very addictive. I too have never made it past level eight but I keep going back to try again. There must be some sort of subliminal hypnotic message in the music.........................

There must be, since I made it to level 14 with no problem, and then lost because apparently I didn't understand what I needed to do - it told me "you went out of time"... I thought the levels were ending because the time was running out anyway... not sure what I was supposed to do differently - I'll need to check the rules.

I also made it to about 14 or so, then ran out of time http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

You've gotta kill X number of cells before the time runs out.

The viruses are pretty lame, what with the complete inability to infect things without your direct intervention.
I have no idea why that's not one of the available upgrades, even if it were just a tiny percentage chance like the immunity.

The biohazard powerup causes that. But it just lets you kill cells, the infected cell doesn't release new viruses. So its a poor simulation of virus action. But anyway, its just a "catch the falling object" game, played upwards instead of downwards, with moving obstacles.

A tip I've heard, but haven't really exploited, is to wait with one rbc left, to see if you can score more powerups. Upgrades become very expensive after 4 level.

I'm gonna go play now. This game is addictive.

Re: Interesting web finds

I figured out I needed to clear the rbc tally before the time ran out on my third game, where I got to level 16 and scored 40685, almost enough for a site high score.

The game ended the same way though, running out of time, even though I killed practically every RBC that arrived, and got the only time-add powerup that arrived. I even most of the invisible RBC's that were inside the anitbody clouds too.

I have suspicions that:

* The game is easier on a slow machine. I've been playing on a slow machine choking on XP http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif , and with a moderate amount of stuff on-screen, it slows way down. I almost never felt at risk of actually losing all my virus spores, or of missing more than a very few RBCs, mostly the invisible ones.

* Some levels may become impossible by chance.

The two combined make it sort of a tedious endurance/stubbornness test. I don't think there was much if anything I could do better, unless there is some trick to get more RBC's or time extension powerups to show up before the time runs out. Maybe on a faster computer, there are always enough RBC's and/or it gets more challenging to keep the spores alive and catch all the RBC's.
