I don't get it... what type of things can I wish for? Everything I've put in gives me a "I've never heard of that."

You can wish for just about any item in the game, unless it is a unique item which already exists somewhere in the sector.

If you know for certain that you spelled it correctly and you still didn't get it, that tells you (1) that the item you asked for is unique, and (2) it's already out there somewhere.

IIRC Fomax will also say "I have THE (item name)" rather than "I have AN (item name)" if you successfully ask for a unique item, so pay attention to that as well.

You can ALWAYS ask for a Particle Vortex Cannon.

Can you wish for a non-unique ship to be added to your fleet or must it be an item? (but then, if I do my Star Wars conversion mod the way I want it, I'll have items that spawn ships to join your fleet and it'll be a moot point for my mod). I'll have to try it the next time I find one of those things and make a wish.

Okay, I just tested it and it doesn't work with ships (even player-created ships). Oh well. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

The first time I ever got to make a wish I wished for eternal life. Maybe I spelled it wrong, but i didn't get it.

They really need to change this so it gives different feedback on asking for an existing unique item VS asking for something that doesn't exist. The current system causes exactly the sort of confusion that led to this thread being created.
