Gnome #2 scenario - maps are not the same!
I play the game on two different machines. I travel for work so during the week, I use my laptop. At home on the weekends, I use my desktop.
I had to re-load Windows XP on my desktop and had to re-install LoL there. Previous to my re-load, I had made it through to the 2nd Gnome scenario which I had beaten after reading some strategy tips here. So, this week, I noticed that I had no beated the Gnome 2 scenario on the laptop. No matter how hard I tried - I could not beat it. I could not figure out what I was doing wrong. I checked my new desktop install and did the registry trick to get me back to where I was before in the campaign. I started with Gnome 2 and just now beat it easily. Something started nagging at me - there was a fundamental difference in the scenario btwn the two computers. I double-checked and sure enough, the maps are different! On my laptop, all of the cities on the map are Gnome cities and the computer swamps me with Legendmakers. On my desktop, two of the cities are *Human* cities including the computer's capital. So, it sends out paladins which I can easily beat. What is going on with the map? Both machines have been upgraded to V1.10. Confused, Ken |
Re: Gnome #2 scenario - maps are not the same!
There is a bug in v1.10 (fixed in the upcoming v1.20 patch) that causes saved/loaded games to have city types change on some campaign maps. Are you by chance saving/loading the game on one machine, which may cause this problem?

Hi - thanks for the reply.
I did, in fact, save the game and re-load it. I just loaded the scenario from scratch and the cities are correct. It was weird when all of the sudden I was facing paladins in a gnome scenario! Now, if I can only get past Gnome 4, wow - those elves expand fast. Any tips on that one? Thanks, Ken |
Re: Gnome #2 scenario - maps are not the same!
I tried it again, building only Gardeners and Legendmakers. 3 Gardeners first, let me grab 4 cities (3 Gnome cities, plus the Elf city to the NE). Then I had several turn where I simply defended, killing lots of units and building one Legendmaker a turn, basically.
After that, it's pretty easy. You can let the Elves occupy your cities, as long as you don't let them take them (beware the Sentinels); and they tend not to concentrate on killing the Legendmakers, so you can build a critical mass of them. |

Hi Phil:
thanks for the reply. Wow - I guess I need more practice or more patience. Even using your advice, I'm still getting overwhelmed by elves! How many is a "critical mass" of Legendmakers? 6? 8? 10? 64? Thanks, Ken |
Re: Gnome #2 scenario - maps are not the same!
5 of them is more than enough to kill anything that comes your way, but you never have too many Legendmakers - keep making more until the Elves disappear http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Phil:
Hmm. Well, I had up to 4 Legendmakers at one point but I was basically overwhelmed by elf units. At least for me, they were killing off 1 LM per turn so that all that I was doing was simply holding my own. I have been unable to effectively defend all of the cities. I'm open to more suggestions. I have not tried some of my usual tactics i.e. sending a sacrificial unit deep into the enemy territory to soak off units while building up strength. Any more suggestions? I must be doing something wrong... |
Re: Gnome #2 scenario - maps are not the same!
It's a tricky one, but fortunately Gnomes are awesome http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
Try starting with 1 gardener, and use him to take the city to the south. After the gardener just build wolfriders for a while - be aggressive with them and use them to kill the runners that are out taking cities. Target the runners on cities that are close to being captured first. Use the gardener to follow and heal the wolfriders. Build a second gardener if you only have $1600 to spend in a round. You shouldn't need to worry about capturing cities too much - I had just 2 gnome cities for most of the game. As long as you are building up your army while keeping the comps city/army count down, then you win. |
Re: Gnome #2 scenario - maps are not the same!
Obviously, Sammas' strategy in this scenario is quite different from mine. He's the uncontested expert on Gnomes, so his is probably best (but mine still works).

Heh, well you've still beaten me the last few times, so I may have to switch races http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
I haven't seen anyone online for ages though :/ |
