OT: Look what I can do - Part II
1 Attachment(s)
Hey, for those of you that remember my previous post from my C++ class, I'm learning a bit of VB.NET now. Attached is my latest homework project. A fun little program that displays info about the states and displays their flags. I even impressed myself a bit. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
This may only run on XP since it's .NET. Not totally sure about that. Anyway, unzip it anywhere, but keep the .exe in the same directory as the text file. (I could have just stored the state info in the code, but the object of the exercise was reading data from a text file.) |

Hello,
Cool, but I keep getting that I need some net thing. I have Xp sp2. Just thought you would want to know. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif |
Re: OT: Look what I can do - Part II
Hrmmm, well maybe yo ucan only run it if you have the .net environment loaded on your machine. O bother. I'll have to ask my prof about that.

Nah, .NET can run on OS's as old as Win98, though you can't expect the best performance in that scenario http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
Hmm... Geoschmo is learning .NET... Geoschmo is a PBW admin... Any interest in reviving the development of PBW2? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif /me also notices that Geo is using the latest version of .NET... shiny http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif Did you know of the "Mono Project"? If you think .NET is just for Windows, think again... Mono aims (and largely succeeds) to bring .NET to platforms such as Linux and Mac! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif /me wants to work on PBW2 now http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif edit: for Atrocities, yes, you need the .NET runtime. It's similar in concept and size to the Java runtime, and you can get the latest version here: .NET Runtime Windows XP does ship with an old version of the runtime (version 1.1, IIRC), but the latest version is 2.0 which adds many shiny new features for developers to play with http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif |

I am also taking an ASP.NET class though, and I was thinking about using PBW as a model for my project due at the end of the qtr. I'm thinking a boiled down version that let's people setup user accounts, create games, and handles the email and file moving stuff. I don't think I could handle setting it up to actually process the games on a server, but maybe if I refine it enough it could be used as a backup when the server goes down. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Basically I started learning programming because I was tired of not knowing a thing about how this server sitting in my garage works. Not so much expecting to get to where I can make a new PBW, but trying to use the experience to maybe take my own life in new directions. My company has lot's of people in development, and I'm getting a little tired of customer support. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif |
Re: OT: Look what I can do - Part II
Heh, you're right... you have that all-important server in your garage... and you have no idea how it works! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif
Say... my brother lives in Dayton... you live in Dayton... I live in Cincinnati... there have got to be other SE fans in the area (ok, my brother doesn't play SE, but he's a more likely way to get my dad to take me to Dayton other than "hang out with people I met online playing this computer game" http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif)... I know a while back there was a convention in Columbus or somewhere where Shrapnel had a booth; I wish I could have made it there to meet up with you and all the other cool people in the community... I was just thinking maybe it would be neat if we could have some sort of Ohio Space Empires get-together, maybe to celebrate when SE5 finally comes out... LAN games ahoy! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif (Heh, not to shove my foot in your door - I'm not saying you have to host anything like this, but I might as well bring it up in case you or anyone else in the area is interested in such an idea... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif) Perhaps now we will find out the ultimate truth... how the others pronounce "Drushocka"!!! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/eek.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif "I wanna be the Drew-shockah!" "The what?" "The Drew-shockah! You know, the silicony green guys?" "Oh, the Drush-o-caw? No, ancient treaties stipulate that the Drush-o-caw belong to me." "Hey, are you guys fighting over who gets to be the Drew-so-kay??? It doesn't matter, I claim the Zye-att-eee." "The WHAT???" "The Zye-att-eee, the cybernetic timelords!" "You mean the Icks-eye-uh-tie? Or are you talking about the insectoid Zee-Chung?" "The Kye-Toon? Doesn't ANYONE here know Chinese?!?" http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif |
