Gunnery Mod Concept - Gridded Mounts!

Say, I had an idea for yet another mod... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Suppose you had 3 classes of direct-fire weapons: Spinal Mounts, Main Guns, and Secondary Guns. (You could also have heavy and light point defense if you so desire.) The spinal mounts would be very inaccurate and expensive, but they'd do massive amount of damage. The main guns would be average, and the secondary guns would be accurate and cheap but do little damage.
OK, sounds ordinary enough, right? Well, what if weapons were scale-mounted so that each hull size had its own set of mounts? So you'd have Frigate Spinal Mounts, Battleship Secondary Guns, and everything in between. A Frigate Spinal Mount might be roughly equivalent to a Destroyer Main Gun or a Light Cruiser Secondary Gun - but the LC Secondary Gun would be somewhat more accurate, larger, and more expensive, since it is designed as a secondary gun for a larger vessel and thus has the turret mechanisms required for a secondary gun.
So what do you guys think - something worth putting into the Low Tech Mod or some other mod, or even its own mod?

Hmm,would be worth its own mod, I'd say!

I'd make weapons less accurate for bigger ships. Keep small ships worth building.

Of course - a Light Cruiser Main Gun will be less accurate than a Destroyer Main Gun, Narf, but a Light Cruiser Main Gun will still be less accurate than a Destroyer Spinal Mount.
Something along the lines of the attached worksheet, perhaps?

Carrier Battles mod uses something like this, only with 5 levels, so that it has gun mounts all the way down to point defense, rather than just antiship stuff.

I heartily encourage it!

Well, CBmod has 5 mounts total, not 3 per hull size, so it's a bit different http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Good idea, too bad you can only use a limited amount of mounts in SE4 (I think 255 or 254).

Some idea for a future version of SE:

Possibility to combine (at least) 2 mounts:
Example:
1) Main gun mount: Large damage, low acc, medium cost
2) Improved Fire Control Mount: Higher accuracy, very high cost.

So you can mount a weapon using mount 1, or mount 2, or BOTH mounts and you have an accurate, large damage weapon, but very expensive (in resources and maybe in research cost)

Just an idea...

SEIV will only allow you to use one mount per component.

Would indeed be a good idea, but you'd have to be able to specify which mounts could coexist and which couldn't. You can't have a single weapon Spinal Mounted as Secondary Gun, for instance.

Good point Strategia...

May be include a field were you can enumerate a list of the mounts "compatible" with the chosen one (the mount in which the list field is), something like the "Can target" list used for weapons in components.txt.

I think this would be a nice touch... And you can make a lot of combinations within the 255 mount limit (but I would make this number higher)
