How to construct a damaging sector device

Anyone know if there's a way to mod a component, facility, hull, or anything else buildable during the game that makes the current sector damage ships like the damaging storms?

Either that, or does anyone know how to mod a storm creator so it creates a storm that damages ships, instead of one that only cloaks them?

Sure, just add the sector damage ability to a component. I do not believe it can work as a facility. Most (maybe all) storm abilities can be used as components (or hull abilities, but that isn't much fun http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif).

Sector damage hull ability... interesting. As soon as you build one of those ships, it damages itself and everything else in that sector!

Or does it work that way? Maybe a ship has to move INTO the same sector to get damaged? How does it work?

Only things moving into the sector will take damage.

What happens when the ship moves?

It's only when a ship moves into the damaging sector, not out of.

Oh, that'd be a nasty 1st strike weapon! I can't see how it'd work in combat in an AI game... You move into an enemy sector you'd go into combat. But if you are not at war with the fleet in that sector, BLAM! That's like Pearl Harbor times 10.

Problem is, the empire that had their fleet sitting there that gets roasted like that wouldnt understand what to do about it... I mean, they would just react passively and try to fix theuir fleet and resupply. The AI wouldnt know you attacked them...

Nice PvP idea tho. Makes Scanners that much more important.

Not to mention your own ships when they are accidently ordered to rendezvous with the ship that has the component!

I modded this once for Devnull Mod Gold. Made satellites with high cloak value (undetectable) and a warhed with sector damage for it. Thus they made unsweepable mines.
The AI didn't like this much, though, and the pathing for player ships didn't either. So I scrapped the idea.

Ahh, so it does work then. I tested it on a facility but it didn't work. Next I'll test it on a component. I like the idea of putting it on a cloaked satellite. Since the ability only does damage part of the time, it's as close to percentage-based mines as we're ever going to get.

What about creating a specific storm type? I've used storm creators before, but they only seem to be able to create sight obscureing storms, and never sector damaging ones.
