OT: Need advice concerning DirectX

Apparently my DirectX is messed up and I need to reinstall it. I have the download, but it's asking me WHERE do I want to install it - a question to which I have no clue.

Any thoughts, help, or advice here would be both very helpful and greatly apprciated...

If it is asking where, then it is probably making a temp directory.
Put it on your desktop, and then once it is done unpacking, look in there for the setup program.

Hmmmm..........

Tried that, and it downloaded a ton of "cabinet files" onto my desktop.

Any new ideas?

Create a new folder somewhere and then use it.

Did it create a setup.exe? Try running that...
Whenever I install DirectX, I just give it the default location and tell it to run the setup file it extracts - there should be a button or something to do that...

PvK : Sounds good, but could you clarify that a bit more. How would I use it?

Ed Kolis : No, oddly it didn't or I wouldn't have had to ask this question. It simply asks me where I want to put it.

Re: OT: Need advice concerning DirectX

Using Windows Explorer, the program that one typically uses to view the files on a Windows computer. For example:

1) Right-click the Windows "Start" button - a context menu appears. Left-click "Explore" from that menu. A Windows Explorer window should appear, showing your computer's file system, and probably starting in someplace silly like C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Start Menu.

2) Pick a location you can remember. I'd suggest left-clicking on "Local Disk (C:)" in the left pane of the Windows Explorer window.

3) Right-click in the right pane at the location you want to create your temporary folder. A context menu will appear. Left-click on "New..." and a secondary menu will appear. Left-click on "Folder" and a new folder will be created in the currently selected location. The name of the folder will be highlighted, with "New Folder" as a suggested title. Type something you'll remember, like "argh", and hit Enter.

4) Go back to the DirectX installer and when it asks you where to extract temporary files to, use the DirectX installer's file-selector interface to browse to your new folder and tell it to use that.

5) After DirectX is re-installed and hopefully actually working, you can probably go find that temp folder and delete it to save disk space.

Turns out I got help from an unexpected source - a friend of my son's father stopped by to pick up his son, and it turns out he knew of a DirectX download that came with it's own install .exe, and WAAA LAAA !!! Got it reinstalled and working. Thanx for the advice and help, though. I really appreciate it.

I'm glad you got it working; it's no fun having DirectX problems!
