OT: Some Help With Windows Media Player

Windows Media Player has crapped out on me, and I was hoping someone could offer some help. By help I don't mean recommending something better ( http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif ) since I'd like to actually get WMP working!

Symptom: WMP opens just fine, but whenever I try to play any sort of file (music, video) it gives me the generic Windows error message:

"Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience", with the option to send an error report or not send an error report. This is consistent and 100% repeatable.

I've tried installing versions 9, 10, and the beta version of 11 that is available. The same thing happens with all versions.

Any suggestions?

Perhaps some codecs have blown up? Try removing all of them and reinstalling one by one.

I can't imagine why anyone would want to get WiMP working again, really. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Simple; it's my parent's computer, and for the past 10 years they've relied on me as the computer person in the house. I'm leaving soon, and don't want to leave some programs "broken" once I'm gone.

I'll try reinstalling the codecs, that might just be the problem. Hadn't thought of that one, many thanks. I'll let you know how it works...or doesn't work. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif

Fyron, you're a genius. I uninstalled a codec pack I had installed quite some time ago, and what do you know? everything was working smoothly again.

Thanks!
