The option \"No warp points\"

What is the purpose of this option when beginning a new game? I've played with it selected for quite a few turns but I can't seem to escape my home system.

Surely I am missing something?

Thanks http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

You need to research stellar manipulations I believe to get the ability to open warp points.

Awesome thanks.

Re: The option \"No warp points\"

even then, in se5 you need to know where a system IS before you can open a warp point there.
in se4 you knew the locations of the systems from the begining of the game, so that was not a problem

apparently not, because SEV doesn't make you pick a system, it just gives a list of system names and distances..

I miss the old method.

"Pick star... any star!"

Re: The option \"No warp points\"

The old system was better both for realism and functionality. Any race with technology even close to the ability to travel through space (let alone opening warp points) should be able to make a reasonably accurate star-chart of thier immediate vicinity. But not so in SE5. I could understand if there was a tech area to enable this, but there isn't even that.

Anyone know if this is something that can be switched on in the settings?

SE5's system could've also used the fog of war allowing you to see all systems in a certain radius, but at the same time allow people to create facilities for dedicated stellar observation.

Re: The option \"No warp points\"

The real issue here is *which* stars are connected...
If there are 100,000 stars in the galaxy, but only 100 can be accessed via warp point openers, then a map of all the stars would be useless.
