OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage here

I wont say anything else than that this video footage is from MARCH 2005. The game is on hold since then.

Can you believe it ? Its just like with Invasion (tv series). Everything that is not 150% guaranteed to make money isnt worth [censored].

LINK TO VIDEO, 87 MB in size. Gorgeous.

yes, this is somehow a reference to the thread AC made :p

What do you use to play it?

What is the game, where is the website, can I purchase an advanced copy? I would buy and play this game even if it had zero depth of play, modability, and replay value. A game like this even in its first incarnation is bound to climb to the top. Assuming greed doesn’t short it into an early release mass production piece of crap!

You cant play it. There was once a game called Nexus: The Jupiter Incident where you had like 6-7 ships of different sizes to make missions. Meanwhile, you could salvage ships and ready your ships with new armament, shields and so on. This is video footage from the engine which was made for Nexus 2. Since the release of that video material in march 2005 the game is on hold, since Nexus 1 obviously didnt sell good enough to reason a second part.

President: Sarcasm, anyone ? The video material alone already shows plently of game depth and replay value imho. APart from that, there were some mods for Nexus 1, which included a B5 and a ST scenario.

Certainly amazing FPS (if rendered live), or movie material.
Unlikely to be tactical combat as we think of it around here; not enough ships, way to many polys, 3D movement, etc.

Most notably, there is no UI.

It's a superb space engine. I remember back years ago when they first released the 'Genesis' demo( it was supposed to be an Imperium Galactica game then, from what I remember ), which was a couple of years before the release of Nexus. The graphics were about the same, and not only that, the game ran completely smooth on my 933 mhz Geforce4 mx computer: the engine's got very good performance, considering the level of detail. I especially liked the way the game rendered beams and shields: too many space games just go for the old projectile-only style, and shield effects are usually badly done, if present at all.

SJ, the video is from a tactical space combat game, no FPS. Some scenes are showing tie camera following a figher, but this is clearly not what the game is about.

As mentioned, you have a bunch of ships with different equipment (as in armor, shields, weaponry).

Think homeworld 2, but less ships and more depth.
All ships have certain ranks in them, influencing stats.
You can target all subsystems (scanner, weaponry, engines, etc). Weapons and shields have different parameters (such as certain weapon can disable shields more easily, while others will only damage sub-systems.)

The video shows in-game footage.

If you ever watched Babylon 5. Just imagine a Babylon 5 battle, and you are the one controlling it. If you like ST more, think about the intro battle in Nemesis (i think) were they are fighting a Cube.

This would be a dream come true, at least for me.

The scene which is beginning at exactly 2:30 minutes is what is making me happy http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

The problem with that is the total lack of UI.
If it is a realtime rendered cutscene, very nice.
If it is a strategic combat, that's an awesome replay.

If it is a tactical combat, it looks great, but how the hell do you control it?
All the graphics in the world don't help if the UI is worse than SE5's.

That's from Nexus( http://www.nexusthegame.com ). The Interface wasn't bad, really. It was the repetitive gameplay that 'ruined' the game, I'd say. The tactical combat and such it provided was fun, but alas you can only do the same things so many times in a row before the fun goes away. They'd do far better to go with more of a Homeworld gameplay style, i.e. adding a strategic layer, resource collection, building of ships, etc.

The video has no UI on purpose. Its just to show features of the graphical engine. Anyways. Even with the not-so-optimal UI of Nexus 1, it would be fun blowing stuff up.
