OT: Microsoft XP SP 2 update Issues.
 

My brother finally decided to get back on line so he dug out his old 2003 Compaq PC and asked me to do updates for him. So I hooked this standard POS up to my network to give it broad band access and had it start to do its windows update.

Well it found nearly a 100 updates it wanted to install including XP Home SP 2. After all the updates were done, after many restarts, and many more updates, the process was completed.

However much to my utter disgust a problem cropped up.

Now whenever I click on my computer, windows explorer, or try to open or use any MS system files like Explorer or any program such as OFFICE, microsoft money 2002 trys to install itself.

Each and every time.

Well this cannot be right... so I download the Microsoft Cleaner Utility that is suppose to fix this. I run it and remove microsoft money 2002 from the Add/Remove registry.

Restart, and the problem is still presistant. Ok, so I try to delete the folder manually, no joy. It won't let me delete half of the files. Great, so I opened the regeditor and deleted every last single notation for MS Money, Micorosft Money, Money, and everything else I could find related to this *****.

The problem is still persistant. I cannot find this GD thing. It isn't on the system any where. Even in safe mode I cannot find this damn thing..

No it is not a virus, it is directly related to XP Home SP2 update.

Any one else have this problem? Any suggestions? (Shooting the PC won't help.)

Pay a MS nerd $300.00 per hour for 24 hours (when it only takes him 15 minutes) to fix it? Joking aside, I don't see why YOUR pc is having the problem when it was HIS that got SP2. Have you tried to re-install it or let it re-install?

I finally was able to fix it.

I went back through the registry and double checked and sure enough I missed ONE file. I deleted that and restarted the PC and now I can access system files without that damn install pop up.

There goes 8 hours of my life that I will never get back. If you use MS support, pay via credit card then dispute the charges. When MS calls tell them that the tech was nice and helpful but the problem came back. Which it will and you will just be out your money.

Now if I can only get that Compaq POS to talk to my HP POS via the network, I would be happy.

Install Linux on both and they should talk together just fine...

I would've suggested punching a hole in one side and attaching a chain - then buy yourself a boat and get him an emachine.

Turn off the XP firewalls and see if you can ping the other system, then try mapping to a share on the other system. If that works, put them in the same workgroup and have at it.
