Pretender changed form?

Hi all,

I'm new to Dominions and played a few SP games. In my last game, I was playing as Pangaea Lord of the wild. I was pushing AI slowly and was trying various things (forging items, trying various spells etc.). At some time, my pretender became horror marked. That was not a big problem, as he had good items and hp boost from dominion. But once, he was attacked by Eater of gods, and immediately after this, by large enemy army.

Now the strange thing: in battle against Eater, everything was good, and pretender won. In battle against enemy army, my pretender appeared as very weak, very old (6xx years) Legionnaire, was killed. What happened to him? Is it some kind of curse from horror, or bug?

I called him back, and he is still legionnaire. What's worse, now he can't fight back horrors (and he must have a lot of horror marks, because horrors come very often).

Another question, is there any way to get rid of horror marks, curse or insanity?

Sounds like a bug I've never heard of, setting you to unit type #1. What version of the game are you playing (e.g. 3.00, 3.04)?

I don't think there's any way to reduce horror marks, curse, or insanity.

Its a bug, i think it was mentioned here before but, afaik, patching should stop it.

3.04 patch is installed.
Any way to fix is manually? Maybe hex edit save file?

Before 3.04, when there was a bug that mage the Hunter of Heroes attack units in the Hall of Fame even when not horror marked, there have been multiple case of this bug : unit attacked by the Horror and changed to unit #1 (the legionnaire unit that you got)

That your pretender is now old is normal : it kept it previous age (pretenders are always several centuries old), but with the new "old age" value for a human (base 50 year)

And doom horrors such as the Eater of the gods have attacks that themselves add horror marks to the target, that's why they come more often now.

But yes, the transformation in unit #1 is indeed a bug, we'll have to wait for Illwinter to fix it.

Ok, thanks for help. I'll just start a new game and will be careful with horrors next time http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

As long as your pretender has some nature magic... with enough research you can cast transformation... which will probably help.
Also if he has some death magic you can cast twiceborn on him which should help against the horrors.

Last if he has some astral magic you can have him cast 'returning' which will have him cast his first spell back to the capital.

Hmm, I tried that - cast transformation once, no effect. Will try again.

I did that, and gave him armor of virtue later http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
