OT: Any \'Second Life\' players out there?
I saw a players' guide for this online game and have wondered what it's like.
I noticed that a basic account is free. What's the catch? I know that you can't buy land, but suppose you don't want to buy land anyway? |

Basically to do a lot of stuff in that game, you need "money". Now you can earn it in the game by doing things, such as stripping in a strip club or such or buy transferring real money to the game.
Just another MMO game which I used for a laugh and quit really quickly. |

I saw this about SL recently:

The idea of being able to create my own avatar and walk around here and there sounds fun. But I like to investigate something before I download it. There's that whole spyware/virus thing... |

Also, this story just broke today over on /.
http://yro.slashdot.org/yro/07/01/24/146229.shtml I'll leave it to you guys to search Google videos for the offensive video in question -- I'm not going to hot link that one. The victim in question was recently profiled in Fortune magazine. She's made thousands of real dollars developing Second Life real estate. |
Re: OT: Any \'Second Life\' players out there?
I am absolutely amazed at the fallout over that little stunt. No, it wasn't at all right to crash an interview like that, but seriously...why is it all over the internet?

I have briefly "played" SL and there really isn't much to do if you aren't going to put real money into it. You can put together a basic avatar and chat to your hearts content for free. Personally, and trust me I have low morals, I found it all a bit seedy. |
Re: OT: Any \'Second Life\' players out there?
I think SL is basically a sort of interesting perspective on society. Although it's not serious enough to be a real sociological profile, it does demonstrate some of the more genuine aspects of human social behavior in general, and the way people interact when certain laws (natural and otherwise) and elements of society are removed from the society, and others added...
After all, if everyone could fly and build things in mid-air by waving thier arms around, the sky would probably look alot like the sky in SL. Fascinating... |
