This is something I have been wondering about for a while now. I have a personal motive for asking this but will refrain on the why until later.

I have my own star field I like to use, but unfortunately it doesn't mesh well with some of the other background skybox images.

I turn it off when looking for asteroids to make into planets. I find it much harder to see asteroids with the background on due to preferring the top-down view zoomed out to see the whole system. (CTRL-S) gives you a quick scan of the system.

I like it personally, I think it just looks bland with it off

I like it off. The background gets in the way. It's not really that bad, though, so I could go either way.

What IS bad, though, is the background in combat. That is something I wish I could turn off, but alas, I have not been able to figure out how.

I don't mind the combat background, but the stupid blue grid keeps coming back every turn no matter how many times I turn it off!!! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/mad.gif
