multiplayer atlantis strategy?

I'm in my first MP VP game, playing Atlantis. Any advice for a relative newbie?

We're early in the game, but my territories keep getting nailed with random events that jump unrest from zero to fifty in a single turn. Is there a good way to maintain order?

How many troops do you recommend be stationed in each new province?

What age?

You shouldn't station troops in provinces, use PD instead.

Unrest will decrease after a while if the tax rate is less than 100, and the computer will set the tax rate to do so automatically unless you tell it otherwise, it just hurts your income for a time...if you really need the income you can patrol down the unrest, but that takes valuable time away from your army, when it could be expanding.

Don't use the auto tax function. Use this formula to micromanage it instead. Every 3 points of unrest requires a tax drop of 10.

I have noticed this too with Atlantis, I had luck-3, turmoil-3 yet I had a huge number of raise unrest events and rebellion events, like krakens, tritons attacking. This was in 2 different games as well.

I have come to the conclusion when playing Atlantis order-3, luck-0 is a must have to avoid being plagued with those events. Of course this is no help to you, as your game as started but something to bear in mind for the future.

I have a vague theory on this, which may just be my imagination or not. Its that when a sea/ocean province has a random event, there is less random events to choose from for a underwater province. This is based on the fact you seem to get the same good/bad events over and over again. I got PD raised by 10 alot as well.

Sorry, atlantis middle era. We're on turn 7 and I've had 4 negative unrest events (no revolts so far). Does this seem unusual?

What are the best troops? Shamblers look promising, but they keep dying in large numbers.

What's the best ratio of commanders to troops? I think the reason I just lost a major battle was that one of my 2 commanders died and all his troops routed.

Troops shouldn't rout because of commander death unless all of your commanders bite it, AFAIK

Shamblers are AWFUL, unless you mean war shamblers. The heavily armored ones, which are decent. War lobsters aren't bad either. Flesh out the bulk of your army with Atlantean shield wielders (the unarmored type) with coral guards as resource sinks. You'll eventually want to shift to mainly war shamblers though.
