I think it's a pretty nice idea. But he needs to improve it quite a lot or add some of the promises of Stars! Supernova Genesis for a more advanced game and less micromanagement options but without the really advanced graphics.

If it's going to be just a clone, I can just get out my Stars! disc and just reinstall the game.

I don't mind the micromanagement but I know some do. He's also doing it as open source so maybe somebody will take up the challenge
