I want drones
 

I actually onece MODed drones into the game, but MM in one of the patches made it so that you can only launch fighters, sats, and mines. In the SE4 Version 1.02 you could launch (or try to) anything you wanted to. I hope MM will change this.

By now, everybody has different ideas about what a drone should be.

I figure it should be a cheap little ship, where you program a series of orders (move here, attack there, warp through the other place), then launch it, and it will follow those orders, self-destructing when it finishes.

Perhaps a cross between a unit and a ship, with no maintenance, and the ability to warp, but you can't change its orders once it has been launched.

I don’t want drones. I want AI that actually knows how to play the game…

All I want is ability to launch drones... though it would be nice if MM put them into the game. And the AI does know how to play the game, Again it just in not the best http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon9.gif .

The AI is strategically incompetent. I recently spent way too much time creating an AI mod. The AI players in this game are really unable to prosecute a war effectively. The movements of the AI fleets are truly pathetic to behold.

This game could be so much more that it is with the addition of better core AI routines. The AI needs to have better target selection. The AI needs to have some concept of defense. The AI needs to have an overall strategy govern it’s actions.

The AI mods that I made cause the AI to expand rapidly and build massive fleets. Once the AI has these massive fleets, it does not have a clue what to do with them! My AI can roll over the other AI players (eventually), but I think that a human would still find them greatly lacking. I sure do.

You hit that one on the head. The AI need. a little more direction.
I have seen many fleets that could kick my butt just wander on past. Hopefully this can be improved upon in future patches.
